View Full Version : [ubuntu] 11.04 Message: "Nvidia Driver is Activated But Not Being Used"?

What gives here?

After countless failed installs, and a memory and motherboard replacement, I finally got 11.04 working. So I then installed the latest proprietary Nvidia driver for the 7950 GT card in my desktop. Now I'm getting this (IMO) ridiculous Alice in Wonderland-esque message.

What's the next step? A Google search shows much frustration and confusion and head scratching but no definitive answer. Anyone?

Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop and have the exact same message.

Despite the message it's installed & working. You wouldn't be able to get into Unity, Gnome 3.0 shell or use compiz if it weren't.

OK, I just installed Wine and got Quake 3 working, so apparently I do have 3D acceleration.

As far as desktop effects go, I don't see any (except for a slight shadow underneath open windows) nor do I see any way to enable them.

But anyway, I appreciate the answer to my original question, thanks.

I'm guessing you are using the Unity desktop, the effects are controlled by compiz & to be honest I don't currently use it but I think you'll probably have to install the compiz config settings manager (ccsm), I don't think it is included by default.

You are welcome BTW, that message had me a little concerned initially as well. :)
