View Full Version : [MEGAPOLL] What Media Player do you use?

rent0n
June 11th, 2011, 12:02 PM
Simple as that. Since the audio/video options in GNU/Linux are never-ending the poll is "manual".

RULES:
- Just quote the message above you, remove the quote tags and add your program/vote.
- Remove the bold tags from other users votes and use them to highlight your vote, so that it's clear what you have voted.
- Add programs to the list in alphabetical order.
- You can put as many options as you want.
- If you change your mind, don't edit the previous post, submit a new one reflecting the changes.
- In case you vote for a server-client system like mpd or xmms2, please cast your vote for the client, not the daemon.

Are you aiming at media players currently in use by the respondents or also media players that have been used but currently are not installed? I'm asking because I've used quite some media player in Maverick but very recently switched to Kubuntu Natty and now only have Amarok installed.

I mean "currently in use" or "preferred". I guess everyone tried/installed several ones. :p

You mean mpc? mpd can't play music on its own, you need a client.

Nonno Bassotto
June 11th, 2011, 05:35 PM
What I actually mean is that I switch between various MPD clients, recently mostly Ario. One of the good things about MPD is that you can transparently change client whenever you want without ever reindexing.

If you prefer, just change it with Ario.

I think the MPD entry is flawed, since you can only use MPD with a client, like ncmpcpp or sonata.

EDIT: My bad, did not see the comment above.

I see you renamed Goggles to Google's, but the correct is Goggles.

How did last.fm get on this list? That's a separate category, IMO.

How did gloobus-preview get on this list? Doesn't it just launch your default player?

Nobody uses Decibel? It's a good audio player.

Well I think Last.fm and Spotify can be classified as audio players in the end, I see nothing wrong in having them in the list.

Gloobus Preview... I can hardly understand what this is, but I doubt it's a video player indeed... Should we remove it?

Decibel: This is freaking amazing! I've always been undecided between Sonata and Audacious. Decibel might be what I was looking for, thanks for mentioning it, hhh!

Really dislike Banshee in 11.04, so I've reverted to my old favourite moc, a simple directory based player that works really well with my meticulously organised music collected. Only downside is it doesn't integrate with the sound menu or laptop media keys. As for video, Movie Player may work, but I know VLC will work :D

They're both online music services, both with paid subscription options. Last.fm doesn't allow you to pick individual songs to play, and it's only free in the US, UK and Germany. I didn't think a "player" that is only available with a subscription and an internet connection is what you had in mind for this poll. Should I include grooveshark.com, YouTube, MySpace and the dozens of online radio stations I've used over time to my list of audio players?

Yes, except Last.fm and Spotify have programs separate from their web services that look exactly like audio players. They play streamed music instead that local music, but, to me, they're audio players.

That said, I see they're not real alternatives to standard audio players, so, if you prefer, feel free to remove them. ;)

Can you hear music using last.fm client or website?
Yes, the same way I can watch videos at YouTube or Vimeo, and I actually have a Last.fm account and stream it to my desktop using Vagalume, a last.fm client, and I listen to the majority of my music that way, but by my way of thinking that doesn't make them media players. That makes them online media services. I can't play my CDs or DVDs or my locally stored mp3 or avi files with them. Put it this way, just because I preview music at the headphone stations at Borders or Barnes & Noble doesn't make them my Linux media players.

It's rentOn's poll, that's just my input.

Tibuda
June 14th, 2011, 12:25 AM
Last.fm website or a client like Vagalume are not a CD or DVD player, but they are a music player. You can play music. I don't know why people try to complicate simple things. The question is: it plays music? It does not matter how (CD, DVD, local files, streaming).

There are many polls about mail clients with Gmail as an option. It is a mail client, which can even read other servers using POP.

Don't remove gloobus-preview, I added that because it is a video player and I do use it. Don't remove something because you won't look it up. It's an eye candy video player that loads inanely fast and closes once it focus is removed, I use it for short clips and you can even turn on the gtk theme and change it so it doesn't close on loss of focus. You can also use it to view images through nautilus (my biggest use of it), and even play your music.

I don't know why people try to complicate simple things.
The same can be said of you... why do you want to complicate a simple concept like a Media Player to include online content?

Don't remove something because you won't look it up.
The hell I won't, I tried but the site's down and the launchpad page doesn't say much about it...

A poll on a web forum is a SERIOUS issue and must be done in the exact, correct way with 100% accuracy, or else the consequences will never be the same!

pppptthtththththhtpppfff, my last post was just defending myself against personal attacks.

@Bibo, I had the time today to do some repo shuffling and got gloobus-preview installed on Debian squeeze. Impressive, and makes sense for me since I already use Nautilus Elementary. Thanks for the heads up.

No, the simple concept is

play·er (plr)
n.
1. One that plays, especially:
a. One who participates in a game or sport.
b. A gambler.
c. One who performs in theatrical roles.
d. One who plays a musical instrument.
2. An active participant: a major player in world affairs.
3. The mechanism actuating a player piano.
4. A machine that reproduces recorded audio or audio-visual material.
5. Slang One who actively seeks out sexual partners and carries on a number of sexual affairs at the same time.

but you are trying to complicate it to

A machine that reproduces recorded audio or audio-visual material if it can play local files or CD/DVD

pppptthtththththhtpppfff, my last post was just defending myself against personal attacks.
That was not a personal attack. You expressed your opinion and arguments. I disagree and posted the arguments about mine. Nothing personal.

It opens with the space key when you're in nautilus and then you can hit the left and right arrows to change between images, but I think for videos it's FF and rewind.

Told you it's awesome. Also, it looks nice with the cover flow thing in nautilus when you're surfing through all your images/music/videos.

I have it associated with all images except .xcf and .psd (photoshop and gimp files which surprisingly it can display with only a few rendering issues).

Hm, a lot of diversity in the audio playing range. I'm happy to see mpd-clients have their share. Video playback is better sorted. I think xine is a little underrated but I can understand that with vlc and mplayer also being awesome and gstreamer being default. It lacks a really decent frontend I guess. Anyway, wanted to say thanks for the hint on umplayer, whoever is the one that entered it; it's nice. Same features as smplayer, plus youtube support, and cooler interface. I think I'm converted to that. Smplayer -1, umplayer +1.

Could VLC be an attack vector through video-files? Ever heard of something like this? I mean there were warnings, but did it actually posed a threat?

Maybe I should consider updating my LTS desktop :-k

I use a desktop primarily... if I ever get a notebook I'll probably install Lubuntu and use audacious which has been minimal but fine in my experience. But after fiddling with banshee and rhythmbox and the others, I've found Clementine to be just right.

Curious how many of you are using Gpodder separately for podcasts, as opposed to having them integrated in the music player?
