I am using ubuntu 11.04. The update manager shows "distribution updates". From my experience security updates and recommended updates are safe to apply. What about distribution updates. Are they safe to apply? Anybody encountered any problems with these updates (like inability to boot, blank screen etc.)?

To be honest, I've not noticed the "distribution update" distinction before, but I have all three libraries that are listed under distribution update in your screenshot and I'm posting from the (unbroken) Natty that they have been installed to.

Is this perhaps similar to the previous "backports" repos, which could take packages from the next version of ubuntu and add them to the previous.

Where is the "distribution update" indication shown?

I don't think so. I don't have the backports repo enabled on my Natty install and I have these packages installed.
