Hi all, is it worth upgrading from UBUNTU 10 to 11.04, what are the pitfall, if any and what's the best way to go about it. ie. run from within 10, or boot to CD ?
I'm a bit nervous upgrading a stable platform to one that is unknown.

Cheers
Andy

I suggest you first download 11.04 and try it as a LiveCD to see what it looks like and how it works with your hardware.

Here are some links you should read before considering an upgrade:

G'day Andy,

I thought it might be worth it until I did it. Now I'm trying to fix the !@$!#%!@# graphics problem.

In future I'll ask myself if the new version is definitely so much better than the old or if its just 'different' (worse in this case), not necessarily better.

Is it worth the risk? What I'd give for an "undo" button about now!

Good luck with it.
Cheers,
Phil

I have let the system upgrade to 11Got so many problems, which I reported on another thread. I ended up doing a reinstall of 10. Much better.
At first I thought it was the way it installed itsellf. But ready here and there and getting all the above, I'm not to sure.
That is way i asked the question.
Upgrading to 11.04, is it worth it?
I'm still uncertain. Will do all the above.

Thanks guys. And I will start looking in my junk folder for email from UBUNT Forum. because that seems to be where they are going. :(

If you are running 10.10 on your only/main computer, and it is running fine, then stay there. The only reason you would want to upgrade is to have newer programs and maybe nicer features. But, there is the chance that upgrading will bork, and you will have to re-install 10.10 anyway.
However, if you are an adventurer, and can't stand "standing still" and don't mind getting your hands dirty, then go for it. It will only allow you to learn more about how your system works, and make you a much more patient and knowledgeable linux user.
Myself, I am on lucid (10.04 LTS) and intend on staying there until most of the unity bugs are ironed out by 12.04 LTS (hopefully). I have three machines ranging from an old athlon 1800+ desktop, to 1 year old laptop, all on lucid. Everything works, as well as they should, and I have no desire for newer features. However, I do cheat, and installed natty in VB to try it out. Another reason to stay on lucid.

I have 5 systems to play with. MSXP on all but two, 7 on a LT and UBUNTU on mine. 10.10 will be staying put.
I'm not an adventurer by any means. Been in this insdustre far to long, thoese days are gone, TFFT. Started out on UNIX, And for some unknown reason, DEC's IIR, I went to MS. Now back, only since Feb. 11 with Linux , and UBUNTU. 11.04 can wait a bit. As you say, iron out the bugs. Which I would have thought an MS thing, not a Linux.
