How can I eliminate the monotonous backgrounds behind some objects I've photographed? I know it's possible, but not how or using what.

Photoshop CS5 has a great tool called background aware that helps with this issue immensely. Other than using a selection tool in other similar programs to remove the background I'm not aware of any other way.

Geh, Photoshop? I'm fine with installing stuff, but such a heavyweight to only take care of this task?
And there are quite a few images to take care of, so the selection tool isn't quite an option. Is there any scrupts for programs like GIMP that can do it en masse?

Ah the content aware filter, apparently there has been a plugin for years in GIMP doing the same thing.
Here (http://o3.tumblr.com/post/470608946/photoshops-caf-content-aware-fill-unbelievable) is just 1 article about it. I think it is what you are talking about.

Removing an object on a photo with GIMP, plus other lessons, very well demonstrated in pictures.
