I heard on a podcast, ( The Going Linux ) podcast, that with an Ubuntu 11.04 live cd, that I purchased, I could , after defraging, I could run the live disc and choose the " install along side windows xp and it would automatically take care of all the partitioning and such. Is this correct? I want to do a dual boot with 11.04 and XP Pro.

Yes, it is very easy to install Ubuntu. :)

I recommend trying Ubuntu in "live" mode with no change to your computer for a few days/weeks. Once you are sure you like Ubuntu and that it fully supports your hardware, then you can go ahead and install.

The only thing you need to check before installing is that you don't have more than 3 primary partitions in use already.

Been running 11.04 for about a month now via Wubi. I'm about ready to put it on the harddrive now. Thanks for the link.

Ok. Now, how do I check how many partitions I have? Never done that before.
Edit: I found it. Looks like I only have one that has XP on it. Should be good to go then right?

In Windows go to Disk Management window and see what it says. If you're not sure post a screenshot of that window.

Yeah...you're good to go. Just follow the on screen instructions and you won't go wrong. Good luck.

Oh...just remember to back up any important stuff first as per usual before doing anything a bit big like this.

Ok. I installed Ubuntu along side XP Pro. The disc I got says Xubuntu 11.04 Desktop on it. It looks a whole lot different than the 11.04 I was running via Wubi. Did I get sent the wrong disc or something? The one I had with Wubi had like a pinkish color desktop, and the icons were all on the left side. Whatever this is, it seems to work real good, and I like it. But, what exactly is it? The desktop I have is blue, and I click on a rat in the upper left hand corner to get a drop down menu with the applications.

Any way to change that if I wanted to? I'm kinda liking it right now. Would Unity be a better choice for better performance or something like that? I'm brand new to this Ubuntu and Linux. Thanks for any help.

Unity doesn't have to be a better choice. The great thing (one of them) about Linux is you can run whatever environment you want.

Unity actually uses more resources than XFCE, though.

If you want Unity back, just go into the Software Center and install "unity."

Log out, and log into the "Ubuntu" session (pull-down menu that probably says "Xubuntu" on it).

Stick with Xubuntu -- get used to the DE -- you'll like it!

You can easily convert Xubuntu to Ubuntu (if you choose) following this tutorial:

As other's have indicated, you can get to Unity pretty easy. I don't know what kind of machine you are running but I have seen Unity run pretty well on a couple different machines one a couple years old, the other a couple more years. ;)

Xfce is different, it's not the lightest on resources, but it tends to be lighter than the other big players (KDE, Gnome, and now Unity).

As you are new to the Linux world, Welcome! You will find that the Linux community, and I can vouch personally for the Ubuntu community, are generally quite eager to help. The forums will be your best friend for a while.

Also, if we ever solve one of your problems, PLEASE make sure to mark the post as "Solved" as this will help other newbies (and often us more experienced as well) to find solutions that work when we need them.

Thanks for all the advice and help everybody. I've decided to keep Xubuntu as it is. I'm customizing it and so far I like it better than Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. Xubuntu hasn't done anything but work perfectly since it was installed. Ubuntu was starting to get a little hincky and going back to the sign in. That may have had something to do with the fact that I was using it through Wubi, not sure. Will mark this as " solved."
