Bandit, that is some seriously hot glitz. Is that all Conky and Gnome Panel?

I can't bring myself to change anything. I added Gmail to DBX (via Chromium's web app feature) and made my minimize button match a little better.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17749392/Screenshots/june-1-2-thumb.png (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17749392/Screenshots/june-1-2.png)

Clean. Synapse has utterly replaced main menus, run dialogs, whatever. I love the hell out of it. I never realized how nice it would be to have a "smart address bar" for my computer. And it works really nicely with Orta / Faenza.

It took me quite some time to figure out what Trailfocus was really for. = ) Shading background windows is not only functional but gives the desktop a little sense of a third dimension I don't get otherwise.

All righty, bring it on.
Elementary Jupiter (eGTK and Metacity), with Wingpanel, Slingshot, Docky - Matte, Oxygen mouse pointer theme. Wingpanel has solved the bug of Empathy not connecting after suspend, and I just adore how fullscreen windows get "tucked" in when you maximize them to the panel.

@Copper
Whaddyaknow, you can scroll through the pages in Slingshot, and it is strangely ergonomic.

I've got AWN up and running. It was a hassle to get it to look like the Gnome-Panel setup I had in my last screenshot, but it looks fine now. I'm a bit annoyed at the complete lack of customization options for the "digital clock" applet and the fact I can't reposition applets as precisely as I can with Gnome-Panel.

Also, I just now realized after making the Natty Narwhal wallpaper and posting screenshots including the wallpaper, that I'm not even running Natty Narwhal. I'm still using Maverick Meerkat. Ha!

I had the same annoyance with AWN. Every clock applet that's currently available aren't very customizable at all. It wouldn't be so bad if you could get rid of the AM and PM, and be able to resize it.

I'm a bit annoyed at the complete lack of customization options for the "digital clock" applet and the fact I can't reposition applets as precisely as I can with Gnome-Panel.

It looks good, though. I like the whitespace. AWN's positioning is theoretically better than Gnome Panel's in that it keeps the spacing uniform, and I appreciate that, but I do wish there was a spacer applet that would just take up X number of icon slots, particularly for layouts like yours.

Clock applets in general aren't as customizable as I'd like, but the only thing I really want with AWN's is a way to get rid of the little AM / PM tag without using twenty-four-hour time. Like many things in AWN, it's really designed to work best with a fat 30px panel, but I'm comfortable with the look with 16px icons, myself. I was irritated to find that it's the one applet that actually uses AWN's "text" color from the theme tab.

I do like that, once you find them, the configuration options for the indicator applet and system tray are better than Gnome Panel's, in that you can do multiple rows or scaled-down icons, split out or turn off the Me Menu, etc. Better Session applet than Gnome Panel's, too, and I've taken to using the included Sound Menu instead of the one that comes with the Indicator Applet. One bit I don't much care for is that an empty Indicator Applet won't disappear, but leaves the last icon displayed there, which is irritating when I've put my Sound and Session menus at specified places in separate applets, then switched to XFCE's power applet, which appears in the notification area, so that Dropbox is the only thing in my regular Indicator Applet area and doesn't disappear when quit.

arzali and el_koraco, goddamn, I really like Elementary. So pretty and simple. And el_koraco, yeah, I never actually got around to putting together that concept on the feeling that it was perhaps a bit overworked, and I was really impressed with Slingshot as soon as I saw it in action. It's simpler than what I had in mind and just as functional, and it would be just as touch-friendly (it's almost identical to Blackberry OS's launcher, which I also found shockingly ergonomic.) Elementary is, in general, much more what I'd want out of a desktop than Shell or Unity.

It sure is. Just adjusted panel translucently to the same of the Conky BGs.
BTW I am really digging your bright theme.
Very cool - I love the transparency and the little curls that blend the whole shape together.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of dark themes, which I still think look more striking and attractive at first blush, but I like the clarity and lack of a sense of weight I get with Orta. I tried setting up my panels to look more like these Shell-style black overlays instead of matching the windows, but I went back to the more substantial-looking ivory theme I had set up for AWN - I really like how unified everything turned out to be.

Yeah it's under Configure Decoration, but that leaves you with just the window title to show the difference between active and inactive windows.

I was hoping for a border around the active window, inside the actual decoration, like you can do with emerald themes.

Edit: A difference in inactive window colour saturation might be a useful alternative :)

two options that I can think of

first for oxygen: window decorations> scroll to oxygen>configure decoration>fine tuning tab> click the outline active window title checkbox.
or
install aurorae kwin engine install themes in it
or
install smaragd kwin engine and use emerald themes in it.

two options that I can think of

first for oxygen: window decorations> scroll to oxygen>configure decoration>fine tuning tab> click the outline active window title checkbox.
or
install aurorae kwin engine install themes in it
or
install smaragd kwin engine and use emerald themes in it.
I love you, that first option is perfect. How did I miss that while looking through the options >_<

Just got done making the gnomenu theme. Pretty much the only change so far. I think I still want to tweak some of the icons on it though.

I had to reinstall it like a hundred times because I was trying to get everything in just the right spot.

I'll provide a screenshot maybe tomorrow. I've been thinking of changing my Conky again.

Nice!!
I used wmfs for a short time, was an older (slightly buggy) version and probably not as sorted as the current one, but I enjoyed my time with it for the most part. Quite a flexible beast. Hope to see more from you guys. :)

GS, would you post your Xdefaults? Those colors are amazing, and what wm is that? cwm?Uhm, both Giant Speck and myself are referred to as "GS", mate. I assume it's me since you mentioned Cwm and Xdefaults.....

The WM is ScrotWM, fyi. I'm done with my WM hopping and just stick to Openbox, Cwm, Ratpoison and ScrotWM these days. I'm assuming you're asking for the .Xdefaults from the scrot a few pages back in this month's thread? Sorry, but I wasn't happy with that colorscheme and worked on it. Quite chuffed with it now, but not sure if you'll feel the same.

http://ompldr.org/vOHdsOA

If you fancy the new tones, just ask and I'll post em up somewhere for ya.

In case you want some of my older setups, try looking here;

Edit: Just added the new color-scheme to that thread as well.

You have that font as well. It comes with the X window system.

Lovin the buttons in yours. Very understated and not too in-yer-face, yet they're embossed just enough to grab attention. That a default property or something you worked on? (sorry, I'm a noob at QT)

@Koleo
Yes, my friend. Sad, but true.
I'm pretty sorted with regards to workflow/productivity.... at least until Dai-chan introduces me to another obscure-yet-awesome BSD WM. Also because I'd much rather spend time fine-tuning my shell (zsh/bash/dash) instead of WM behavior.

in qtcurve you can control the lightness/darkness of the embossing effect, so just tweak until it looks okay :)

No idea for Ubuntu. I read somewhere that it has bitmapped fonts disabled by default, so you'll need to enable them manually

Did some scroogling, maybe the second post in this thread;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1270870
or
http://www.alanbriolat.co.uk/2009/04/enable-bitmap-fonts-on-ubuntu-jaunty/

!!-EDIT-!!
But then I read that some of those fixes distort the rendering in Firefox and other GUI apps, so maybe this thread?;

which leads to this;

YMMV. Can't help any further, I'm afraid. :(

I've come to appreciate that a subtle, readable, and detail-conscious theme can actually enhance the desktop experience instead of distracting from it. I was never a fan of radiating green ooze or anything, but I did use a nice paisley theme (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/kreator_theme?content=112414) for about a year that now makes my optic nerve bleed to think about.

I did like Ringi's modified [something] beige theme - I don't remember now what he started with. A consistent monochrome palette can be attractive and cohesive. That said, even Ambiance is too busy and heavy for my taste. (And one bit that bothers me more than it ought to is decorator themes that don't blend with the GTK theme. I don't need a visual cue that this part is titlebar, and this part is menu bar, and so on. Pick one color and stick with it, and don't add a bunch of visual garbage that effectively increases the number of visible UI elements.)

I didn't even like Faenza at first blush, but I'm using it anyway. If someone else has a decent idea of how icons ought to look and wants to put in one third the effort that went into making that pack as smooth and complete and well-thought-out as it is, I'd love to see the result.

I hated monochrome icons, and I even used to hate Faenza, but every icon set I came across just had one quirk that bugged me. I started using a global menu because too many themes just had a title bar that was out of place with color. I still have some, but it's lessened.

We're getting there at least. Also Ubuntu needs to stop using orange and purples. They're hideous on their own and they're even more hideous together. I've seen a lot of cool dark themes, but they all have the same freaking issue, things like Open Office will be dark, or anything that has a text box (i.e. any internet browser) will be darkened.

Copper Bezel
June 5th, 2011, 07:53 AM
It's not the GTK theme that's the problem - it's devs not following the rules and putting the selected text color on top of input area background or input area text on top of application background and so on. You'll notice, for instance, that it doesn't happen in apps that come directly from Gnome. That's part of why I gave up on dark themes as well (although they also are a little, you know, oppressive.) And I know what you mean about that one little quirk - Faenza is simply, thus far, the only icon theme that hasn't irritated me with something that forced me to make a custom icon or just deal with some irritating inconsistency. And of course they're beautifully made, even if the look is a seriously acquired taste.

The orange in the default Ubuntu themes is hideous, but I love the purple terminal, particularly with frosted RGBA effects. = )

I've discovered elaborate panels and docks offer nothing more than eye-candy. I may be tweaking themes here but I still want it to be usable. I have a ton of wallpapers that fit with brown which I wanted to use for some time, but lack of brown since Lucid kept me back. Now with the easily recolorable divergence theme I can do whatever color combo I want.

Really impressive, playing with it in Virtualbox after long time haven't checked it.

Next step will be adding Ubuntu font and a nicer theme.

I don't know about you guys, but I hate Faenza. I don't like squareish icons in general so that might be why.
I didn't like it at first, mostly just because it's a copy of Apple's. But the nice thing about it is that's it's extremely consistent and has icons for tons of apps and file types.

My first post in many many months.

Today, rather than study for my exams, which begin tomorrow. I've had DWM on my laptop with #! for a long while, but never had time to mess with it. Today, after an hour or two, I've made progress, and set up the colours on elinks.

It's a long road, but it's a step.

Opinions are of course always welcome and requested.

Is there a way to install those icons?

Copper Bezel
June 8th, 2011, 05:47 AM
They're just .png files. You'd need to replace the icons you want to change (and since Faenza automatically installs to /usr/share/themes and updates with the system, you'd need to copy the Faenza folders to ~/.themes before you do, then make the changes there.)

I don't have much time to look at all of the pics, but after seeing some of the amazing first pictures in this thread, I got to thinking about something.

Has any of you more astute users (noob off the boob here) configured things such as when you're listening to your favorite music, the desktop background changes to match the album picture for each song you're listening to? That would be quite dynamic!

Sorry I didn't post more details, I post the same setup with a new wallpaper and custom-colored themes and icons to match very (http://s3.postimage.org/653pn8mn1/Screenshot_05302011_04_33_07_PM.png) frequently (http://s4.postimage.org/5ctz2bdkt/Screenshot_05312011_09_02_33_PM.png) and the details are lengthy. Everyone not interested should start scrolling! :^)

It's Xfce on Debian squeeze, not Xubuntu, but you can do the same thing in Xubuntu. The right-click menu is easy, just right-click your current desktop, Desktop settings...>>Icons>>Appearance>>Icon Type, switch it away from None and back and you will have a "root" menu but you will lose desktop icons and shortcuts, so it's a trade off.

I edited the menu structure (/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu, should be the same path in Xubuntu but might not be) and hid a lot of menu entries (/usr/share/applications, open the .desktop files in a text editor and add NoDisplay=true to the bottom of them).

The icons are Humanities custom-colored via Magicons (make sure Ubuntu's Humanity icons are installed for the full effect). A lot of the time I use Clarity icons as they can also be custom-colored, as the first post in this thread shows.

GTK theme is based on Albatross, which should be preinstalled on Xubuntu as it used to be the default theme, or you can download it fron GitHub (download link is on the right of the grey box below the green one)...
https://github.com/shimmerproject/Albatross

The window border/Xfwm theme is based on Totem which is part of xfwm4-themes...

You can get transparency in windows from Xfce's compositor (Settings>>Window Manager Tweaks>Compositor, I lowered the value of inactive windows and left the rest full).

What else... the "dock" is Talika applet running via xfce4-xf-applet, the file manager is Nautilus Elementary and the audio player is Audacious 2.4.4 (I got them from Debian sid and Hadret's repos but here are the links for Xubuntu)...

Not shown in the screenshot, I also customized Xfce's notifications to match. If you just want to install the themes, icons and wallpaper post back and I'd be glad to upload them. If you want to try your own customizations and want help or have any other questions, send me a PM.

Wow, I'm blown away with that response. Thanks heaps for a full and quick reply; it's stuff like that that makes the scary world of Linux not so bad for a newbie like me!
I have Xubuntu_desktop installed with Ubuntu, but so far I've been a bit wary about straying away from GNOME. After seeing your customisations I may have to check it out. I always thought that Xfce was too lightweight to look great, but you shot that idea down! Cheers.

Xfce also here on Debian Squeeze.

Clean and with music running.

Using a wallpaper that I maybe have from here or from the Debian forums, not sure anymore. :D
Theme is Shiki-Statler, icons are Elementary-Statler, Window decorations are also Shiki-Statler. So to have this, I added the Crunchbang repo to my sources list under Debian.

What Audacious plugin is that?

@nzjethro, no problem!

@rentOn, no plugins, Audacious 2.4.4 introduced native GTK theming, that sound-level display automatically picks up the color from your GTK theme (nselected_bg_color). Slick, isn't it??

So that's audacious 2.4 default look? With the album cover and the sound bars?
How did you install 2.4 in Squeeze? The version in the repos is 2.3 and only displays a playlist under the controls.

Thanks!

Yes, its the default look.
You can grab 2.4 from Testing/Unstable. Though, the newest version is 2.5.1. :D
It has even dockable widget components under Gtk. Look here (http://audacious-media-player.org/).

June 9th, 2011, 05:53 PM
@rentOn, as ivan said it is the default look if you hide the menubar , playlist and status bar (Ctrl+Shift+m, Ctrl+Shidt+p, Ctrl+Shift+s, respectively). Album art has to be in the folder your music is stored in (it can be a hidden image) so if you just pop a CD in you won't have album art, but if you have an internet connection it will retrieve the track info.

I love Audacious because it is lightweight and I especially love it for its out-of-the-box gapless playblack. If I pop the CD Dark Side of the Moon in it plays without track breaks, and even with mp3s it's either gapless or at the most a slight click/pause as the track changes.

I see you're on Xubuntu, 2.4.4 is in the Natty repo...
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/audacious

For squeeze just add temporarily add sid to your sources.list (again as ivan said). 2.5 wouldn't compile for me on squeeze and I didn't try building 2.4.5 as 2.4.4 has the features I want.

The Webupd8 guy has also a PPA with the latest 2.5 version for Ubuntu, I think even for 10.04, but I am not sure. Though, the version 2.4 is just fine as hhh said.

Thanks, that screen would have looked so much better if I had remembered to turn Nautilus Elementary's menu back off, dammit. I've been listening to Dorfmeister since The K & D Sessions came out in '98. I definitely prefer D's Tosca project to K's Peace Orchestra, at least from what I've heard so far.

Been a while.....Lookin good as usual, mate.
Good music too.

@cracker89
It's Xfce with Openbox as the window manager, as Urukrama says. You can also just run Openbox as a standalone WM and use the xfce4 panel in it for a similar look. His GTK and OBT (OpenBox Theme) are self-made. Urukrama tends to prefer the Mist engine for his GTK themes most times, I've noticed.

You'll probably need to read up on Openbox first. Taking the Xfce route and replacing Xfwm with Openbox is probably the easier option if you're new to this sort of thing, but Urukrama has a guide for those interested in setting up a standalone Openbox session : http://urukrama.wordpress.com/openbox-guide/ (it's a bit dated, but most of it should still be relevant)

Edit: He's using Meego icons (for the folders, at least)

Hope this helps.

I haven't released the themes yet. I'm still working on a few details of the Gtk theme. When I release them, they'll be on box-look.org, in the Openbox themes section.

Openbox is a light window manager you can run on its own (have a look at the somewhat outdated guide linked to in my signature), or as the window manager in a desktop environment like Gnome, KDE or XFCE. If you install Openbox, you can select a Gnome/Openbox or KDE/Openbox session at your login screen to use Openbox as the window manager with Gnome or KDE. TO use it with XFCE, login using the XFCE session, open a terminal and type

openbox --replace &

This will replace Xf4win with Openbox. Log out, and tick the box "save session" to have Openbox load again as the window manager on your next login.

Actually, I prefer the XFCE engine, but often use Mist for some parts of it (in this theme only for the disabled/inactive text in menus). The XFCE (and Mist) engine is one of the lightest Gtk engines, and is fairly configurable too. It is a pity the default XFCE themes are so ugly.
