I'm planning on buying a new laptop for college and i'm wondering if anyone has bought laptops that don't come compiled with windows, i've done a very small amount of research and it appears that most companies bundle windows with their laptops without giving the option to install a Linux distro or even not install an OS. if you have or if you know where this might be done it would be of much help.

Thanks,

It's not a laptop, but I thought I'd post this:

Dell's Open Source Desktops (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/e510_nseries?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs)

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39261437,00.htm This is why you can't easily find non-windows hardware. Microsoft is muscling the hardware makers and is accusing everyone who does sell "OS free" hardware of being pirates. They are sending their goons to "investigate" anyone who is selling or buying a PC or laptop without windows. Because in their arrogance they believe the only reason to buy a computer without windows is to save money because you have a stolen copy of windows. Not that people want a different OS and don't want to pay a Microsoft tax on their computer because they are going to delete microsoft and put on Linux or solaris or BSD.
Sorry to ramble but this has been one of those days and corporate giants like this who limit peoples freedom of choice just for their bottom line make me incensed.

Speaking of Dell's Open Source doodle:

I too recently noticed that Dell was shipping GNU-linux machines, or to be more exact, I had it pointed out to my by one of my co-workers. We then set right out and called our Dell guy to ask if/when we'd be able to order laptops without Windows. The guy said that he hadn't heard of any plans to sell laptops Sans-Windows, but that he has gotten a lot of requests for them, so he didn't see why they wouldn't be rolling them out whenever they first can.

Might not be a bad idea too call up there sales department, just to let'm know your interested, and they should get up off their hands.

I saw the Dell booth at LinuxWorld here in Boston, and I asked the lady there if they were selling GNU/Linux systems...and the answer was those Open Source Desktops. :-|

I am in a similar situation for a laptop over here as well. Its like the article that was linked up here from catlett. Good article by the way to show us. Its mostly because MS wants to be donimant in the market of the PC side. And does not want any other OS on a nude pc that is being built from the manufacturer. I am even double checking with some of my resources here to see if there is a way around this. Even if means loading it up temporarily with another version of linux. And not to put the other version down either.
