Patch a package before installing

Hi, I want to use sane but I need to apply a patch to the source code before installing it. Is there a way to do this with apt-get? I know I will have to do it manually but if there is a way to automate the process... like downloading everything with apt-get, patching and then use ubuntu to execute and install (deb package?) would be great.
