Here is the minimum RAM requirement for 9.10 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/ReleaseNotes. You still would need to add 128MB ram for a minimum total of 256. Your CPU seems ok as it is over 1.0 Ghz.

I would suggest to buy some additional RAM for a better user experience, but a ~200-300$ netbook would beat this Dell by a long shot and you could then get 11.04 ;)

Just my two cents

The specs say Installed RAM can be anywhere from 128 megs to 2 gigs.

How much RAM is actually installed in your system? This is your only real limit to which OS version you choose.

+1

If this system has less than 256 megs or less, don't waste money on old RAM for it - Not all 'free' PCs are really inexpensive!

Well you can install a different desktop environment as well. I never had requirement problems but have tried other flavors of Ubuntu and distros to see different DEs.

You can take a look at Lubuntu or Xubuntu. I tried the LXDE DE in Arch Linux and it used a total of 68MB and toped out at 136MB with firefox running. Also 11.04 is not as bad in memory and comes with the option to the GNOME2 DE at the login prompt whenever you login.

Also take a look at the alternative ISOs that Ubuntu provides just in case the installation does not go well. It will install in a CLI environment (A little harder because of no graphics) and when it finishes, you will have X start and everything is alright.

Good news, I was able to install ubuntu 11.04 on an 800 mhz HP Pavillion. the bad news is that i had to put an additional 256 megs into it to get anywhere near a usable UI. With twice the processing power, it might not be so bad, but you will have to do something about the memory. What you might want to try doing, if you have trouble with the LXDE UI, is getting fluxbox. I was able to run fluxbox on ubuntu 10.10 with 64 MB of RAM. The only possible downside would be the need to use the command line heavily.

lubuntu might not be, but it's hard to tell. 128 mb is the minimum requirement to run, and says that the memory might be slow. If you have the extra memory laying around, it might be worth it to install it before installing lubuntu (less messing with swap).
