Just received the acceptance letter, and I'm looking for some worthy graphics design apps, I already have been using GIMP for 3 years (since I was 11 ;) ) and I also use Inkscape.
Any other good applications on Ubuntu Linux?
Thanks in advance.

Corel Draw, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator... Adobe/Macromedia Flash.... those are the apps you should get... you would need to run them through Wine though.

I would get Photoshop and Illustrator, but until they support a native application for Linux, I'm not going to buy their products :(
Any native applications for Linux? Should have added that I'm looking for native applications, not running software through WINE. And yes, I'm willing to pay for the applications.

There are some really good apps for graphic editing in the Ubuntu Studio distro, I don't remember the names....

Blender, FontForge, Scribus, Fontmatrix, SwatchBooker. Also Synfig, if you for for 2D vector animation.

I use MyPaint, GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender.
I urge you to check out Ubuntu Studio (www.ubuntustudio.org).
Even if you're just looking for some apps, Ubuntu Studio has some inspiring stuff.

Thanks :) I was considering Ubuntu Studio, but went with the regular Ubuntu spin instead.
How good are the drivers on Linux for Wacom tablets? I've considered getting one.
I had Blender on Windows Vista (my Nvidia graphics card was overheating). Was practically unusable. Haven't installed it on Ubuntu yet. In fact, I'll install it now.

For anything 3D I highly recommend Blender 2.5!

Yes wacom tablets are supported (out of the box for most models).

They are good, but software support for wacom is not always up to date regarding latest linuxwacom drivers.

You are probably referring to old Blender 2.4x, no? :) Try 2.57.

From what I know, most of the graphics industry use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

very true that the industry uses adobe suites however doing the same does not stop you within a linux environment, the programs on linux gimp, inkscape etc can all be read by adobe's software.

The class may have a requirement for particular apps. I suggest consulting your instructor.
