What would be the best distribution/version of Linux to attempt to run on a OLD desktop computer that has only 192mb of RAM ?

Want a GUI.

Thanks.

I would say Crunchbang, Antix, Slitaz, Puppy and there are some more similar lightweight distros.

Lubuntu uses around 90mb of RAM for a newly logged in desktop. Debian LXDE is also a good choice, although it's a little more complicated to set up and use.

A (built-up) minimal Debian install runs quite well on a laptop I have with 192mb ram. You have to be careful which programs you decide to install though. You'll want to run a lightweight window manager such as Openbox, Fluxbox, PekWM or a tiler for example rather than a fully fledged DE. Program-wise, Firefox will be as slow as molasses, so something like Midori (or even lighter such as uzbl would be better). Even then, some of the more 'complex' sites may slow it down.

Basically, a minimal starting distro is a good idea, be it Debian, Ubuntu, Arch etc - but the program choices are particularly important with that amount of RAM.

Another option would be Linux Mint XFCE (201104), which is based upon Debian "testing", but has taken some of the work out of configuration.

Another candidate would also be Bodhi Linux, it released now the version 1.1.0, it uses Enlightenment.
