Hello,

I'm facing a situation I can solve alone.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - 2.6.32-31-generic.

My Nvidia card has broke on me (Asustek EN8500GT Fanless), I had to change it for an Asustek EN210 Fanless.

Now I can't use my former display which used to 1900x1200 - I can only use 1600x1024.

Funny thing is that when I use the "nouveau" driver everything is OK no problem of display (but there is absolutely no 3D acceleration under "nouveau").
My issue happens only with the "nvidia_current" driver.

My last action was to buy yet another CG (MSI N8400GS), which has not solved anything.

Don't know the root cause of the EDID problem...could be monitor/cable/driver/kernel.

The mode 1920x1200 is validated (2 modes)..

Are you using the nvidia-settings program (GUI) ?
When using the nvidia driver, you can not use the gnome display preferences to set/change/read monitor resolutions.

The video card GT210 is a waste of space/time/money.
The GT430 is an ideal entry level card if you can live without any component output options.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your insight. I always use nvidia-settings to change the resolution.
The strangest part is that when I use the "nouveau" driver everything is perfect (not even a message about EDID).

Sorry to hear that the EN210 is a waste of time (and money).

I'll have a look at the GT430... hope I'll find something Fanless.

For the EDID I have look all over the place without any luck.

You can try to add this to screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"

Then the video mode pool will be validated against your vert & horz frequency data.
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 76.0

I would make these a bit wider..
HorizSync 27.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 49.0 - 76.0

Interestingly, your 1920x1200 mode is validated okay...you should be able to select it..

Other who have had EDID problems have success ?? trying other ppa of the nvidia driver

Hello,

I have tested your advice :
I have changed my xorg.conf
restart gdm
I end up at 640x480 (worst resolution possible).
When I open nvidia-settings, the max resolution is 640x480.

One thing I have noticed, when using "nouveau" is that the resolution is recognized as 1920x1200@74 Khz and not 60Khz.

Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (as attachment) for the use case

Option "UseEDID" "False"
?

The best video mode to use with DFP is 50 or 60Hz refresh (for video).
The internal pre-scaler of most monitors only works with 50 or 60 Hz refresh.

Well... my problem is solved.

I have been doing some archeology in my old PC stuffs and I have dug a GeForce 7600 GS-PCIe Fanless. Probably an old CG from my former PC.

Plugged-it and powered on : result = direct 1920x1200, without any problem. I'm using NVIDIA driver V270.29.

Notice that the same EDID errors occur with both video cards..but with your 7600 card you get to select 1920x1200... crazy.
