Back in the day when I tried (albeit with VERY limited success) to install linux on my home pc in the late 90's (RedHat 5.2 ish i believe was my first attempt!) we had that little linux penguin absolutely everywhere. Now, in the days of multiple hugely successful distros (which thank god are much easier to install!) all with their own branding, logos and mascots the poor little penguin rarely makes an appearance.

I have a mousemat of him swatting the msn butterfly with a particularly devilish look in his eye that I am ever so fond of :)

Whats the chances of a 'Plucky Penguin' in his honour at release 12.04???!!!

Tux has always been the Linux mascot and he is not going anywhere:

I'd say that although all the linux variants pay ceremonial homage to tux the penguin, they all want to have their own branding and artwork to make themselves more unique and identifiable.

There's still a bunch of programs with the word tux or penguin in their names though, and lots of times you'll see tux in some sort of dialog box or random artwork of some program.

Sure. I could go for that. :D

I'm not sure of the best channel to make this suggestion for Ubuntu (nor whether they have already chosen a codename for that release).
