One thing linux seems to lack is overall 'branding'. The Tux penguin sumbol is a pretty good and fun symbol of linux - I cannot understand why it is not seen on the Ubuntu sites - or the merchandise. Why is this?

Because we have our own logo, the circle

No need to change the logo, but adding to it would be nice...

All distro has it's own identity. Others have their red colored hat, stars, piramid, green reptile and etc. I feel we're doing just fine with tux as the mascot for GNU/Linux in general and each distro with it's own mascot.

It's not as appealing anymore. Tux used to be cool as heck back in the day, but now, I'd like to see RedHat for example, add Tux to their logo, and see how much sales drop. It doesn't look professional anymore. It's great for an underground, independent distribution, but a corporate distribution, whether it's pay-only, free to download, or they ship you free cds, probably don't want tux in their logo. I think work needs to be done to the overall branding of Linux as well.

I hope I won't offend anyone, specially the creator of the tux logo. But I simple hate it. And I have the following reasons for this:
1#The penguin is sitting down [not dynamic]

2#he has a very «I am Sam» kind of smile

3#late 80's design look ...somehow I think of Don Johnson when I look at it

4#Why is there this cuteness complex in *nix logos? darwin, bsd, linux...even the GNU from gnu looks stupid.

the only decent logos [what I consider to be good design] are the ones from ubuntu [circle, people, dynamic] debian [swirl also dynamical and spiral growth] Suse [chameleon..adapts] Ximian [evolves] Red Hat [so strange and cool at the same time...makes me think about early 1920's mafia]
I have doubts about the gentoo logo, maybe it will evolve to something better.
gnome is ok but stupid at the same time...
kde makes me sick both the gear and the ugly reptile.

well and windows only makes me think of defenestration

Agree with every word brother.
Except the KDE gear, I do like that, but Konqi the dragon-- cutting myself off before I get too upset.

8) Tux was never cool
Therefore, Tux is always cool.
He does not do faster!, cleverer!, moreuptodate!
Because we all know that if Tux is sitting there, the above are given.

There's nothing wrong with tux!
Tux looks and is a MUCH better logo than almost any distro logo.
Except maybe the ubuntu and the red hat logos, but he's still way cooler than them. :)

Meet the creator of tux here (http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/penguin/)

I also feel that the penguin doesn't really reflect professionalism. You need abstract graphics to achieve this.

Also, to further promote linux, all distro's must incorporate this in their own distro. This is the least they could do to thank Linus!!!

If only someone could come up with a stylized Tux. That might help. But all the cute penguins...I can do without them. Same goes for the other cartoonish logos. They just don't look serious enough. Lets see if anybody can contribute a stylized Tux. Just a few lines, two or three, that show its a penquin but denote that Linux is the wave of the future.

I like the Suse one, he looks so tough, like he's ready to take down all who oppose him, and crash them like the little minions they are

The SuSE penguin? I don't recall a SuSE penguin honestly. I know there's the lizard, but I can't remember a penguin. Got an image?

I see Tux, the penguin logo as not a mascot, but rather an symbol. The symbol to me represents linux/unix, and therefore I like it's use and the connection it brings to all linux distros. So, I would like to see all distros use it in a subtle way to suggest the commonality they have.
just my 2 cents.

don't buy the damned thing though... they trick you into a minimum 12 week "contract" and you get charged at premium rate for every message they send you...

It doesn't look professional anymore.
Whereas calling a release warty warthog, or hory hedgehog does look professional?

It sounds like a kids game...

Those are codenames. Longhorn? Whistler? All MS codenames are Ski Slopes. All Ubuntu codenames are animals.

To me Tux is cool, always has been, he has the chilled out look when things don't look good coz he know's it'll be alright in the end. He is an inspiration to all :P

Well it sounded good didn't it?

Server companies need a unique symbol to show the difference between Windows and Linux servers, so they use Tux simply because not everyone will recognise the SUSE gecko or the mandriva star. Tux is the universal symbol for Linux

One thing that I vaugely remember reading online was that the penguin was picked because it's different and surprising. (At the time)

Linux is fast, agile, efficient, etc... Things penguins are not, unless you **** one off, in theory when angered penguins can steamroll you over with speed. Therefore, you would not expect that from a penguin would you?

Linux is essentially command line based, as is DOS. Can you compare those two with a straight face?

fast, agile, efficient, etc... Things penguins are notEver seen a penguin swimming? Fast, agile, efficient, graceful. Fast enough to jump completely out of the water and land on the ice.

It's only when they try to walk that they look silly.

Heh, that's what I meant, on land.So out of its natural habitat then, rather like linux on a desktop rather than a server. :?

Ah... I see what you mean!

Kinda like that.
Either way, it's just unexpected for the mascot to be a penguin.

Another thing that might have been said earlier was that the penguin is customizable to "your liking"

Red Hat could put a red fedora on Tux's head and that'd click in everyone's mind, or on the debian start up screen, Tux with beer in a pilsner glass. Could you have the Windows logo drinking beer or wearing a hat?

Just another point to argue.

Apparently, the linux community was looking for ideas for a logo, and thought it ought to be some kind of animal. Linus said "I've always liked penguins", so it was settled.

Democratic, best part being... I don't hear anyone complaining. ;)

Here (http://www.gwaihir.org/etc/tux.html) is the full story.

"Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had."
-- Linus Torvalds

Just watch the trailer for a documentary titled "March of the Penguins". The voice over is by Morgan Freeman. I'm sure most will fall in love with penguins after that.

:D :D LOL! Ha, ha, Oh, that's it, I love it, it's perfect. At about 50 seconds into it, while they're marching, one penguin at the bottom left corner trips, it's hilarious!
The penquin is perfect for Linux. is it windows? is it mac? no it's Linux! I also agree that the distros should incorperate it somehow. Even if it's small.
