View Full Version : Fantasy musical super group

Musicians (alive or dead) you'd like to see together in a band. Try to mix it up as much as you can (if you really like a certain band, try to put only one member from it in your fantasy super group) and finally try to describe what you think this band would sound like. I'll go first!

Drums: Steve Gadd (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, many many others)
Guitar: Steve Howe (Yes, Asia, many others)
More Guitar: Jeff Beck (Yardbirds and many others)
Bass: Alain Caron (Uzeb, Didier Lockwood, others)
Piano: Tori Amos
Vocal: young Peter Gabriel (from the Genesis years)

OK, so here's how it'd work. Steve Gadd would lay down rock solid rhythms which sound simple but are damn near unplayable by anyone but Gadd (50 Ways to Leave Your Lover) causing any listener to groove from befuddlement.

Howe would invent new and strange things to do on the guitar that, again, are simple and obvious if you're Steve Howe. Much of the melodic structure (though not necessarily the melody itself) would come from here.

Jeff Beck would put in the sweet, sweet guitar melody that would make people's brains ache with auditory pleasure.

Alain Caron would spice things up with a bit of a jazz vibe... and two 4x10s.... and a subharmonic synth. If Gadd's funkiness doesn't get people out of their seats, the sheer amount of air being moved my Caron's bass rig will blow them out of their seats!

Tori would play the role of an extremely sophisticated rhythm guitar with her thrash metal Bösendorfers, making sure songs build and release in an epic fashion. Also backing vocals for...

Young Peter Gabriel. Sure, he's a much better singer now, but young Peter Gabriel would add grit, darkness and character to the whole mix. The rest of the band sounds so good, Peter's 'ugly' voice would set the whole thing off! His skill as a spooky, schizophrenic front man who can personify what is being played would focus the audience's adoration for the music on whatever strange message he wanted to convey!

So. Would you pay to see such a band?

Who would you like to see in a super group? Don't worry, you don't need to go in to as much detail if you don't want to. Or go in to way more detail! It's all good.

Interesting thread.

I would have to say Chicago and the Blues Brothers + Band. Terry Kath AND Howland on guitar.

Hmmmmmm

First some fat fat bass

Aston "Family Man" Barret (Bob Marley & the Wailers)

Then for some skirting rhythms around it, on drums

Jim White - The Dirty Three

Some understated keys, that go wild from time to time

Herbie Hancock

On rhthm guitar, because nobody understands the method as well

Bob Weir - Grateful Dead

For fuzzy guitar and bluesy licks

Billy Gibbons - ZZTop

And for some crazy witchy woman vocals

Stevie Nicks - Fleetwood Mac

Hows that?

@decoherence, impressive selection, except... Tori Amos??!? Crap man, put Billy Preston or Stevie Wonder or Keith Jarret or Vladimir Ashkenazy up there, anyone who doesn't rip off Kate Bush. Faker.

@IWantFroyo, Alex Van Halen... are you freaking kidding me? Keith Moon or Stuart Copeland or Bill Bruford or Neil Peart or John Bonham or Mitch Mitchell or Ginger Baker or that one armed guy from Def Leppard. Crimeny, somebody who can drum.

@NightwishFan, +1000 for even knowing that Terry Kath. Was. The. Man.

@nothingspecial, not bad.

Impossible mash-up...

Lyrics: Kool Keith
Beats: Dr. Dre
Vocals: Stevie Wonder and Chrissie Hynde (-edit- or just use Freddie Mercury, or, if you want a pure voice, Christine McVie)
Guitars: Frank Zappa (lead) and George Harrison (rhythm)
Bass: John Entwistle (backup bassist -in-case-of-flu-: Jaco Pastorius)
Keyboard: Billy Preston (or Stevie Wonder or George Duke)
Drums: Stewart Copeland
Producer: Mad Professor (George Martin- Executive Producer)

/end snobbery

Of all the names I expected to drop from Dream Theater, it surprised me to see John Myung show up first.

Don't get me wrong, he's great. He's just overshadowed by the others. ;)

Sometimes two different styles are awesome but they shouldn't be mixed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Fighters#Band_membersDidn't Pat Smear play the bass for them for a while?

Vocals: Bobby McFerrin

Bobby McFerrin is amazing.

i agree, he is overshadowed by almost all the others (except LaBrie, he's nothing special IMO) but i dig his bass chops and i wanted to avoid John Patitucci and Victor Wooten or it would've been Chick Corea's Elektric Band pt. 2 :P

@forestcupp: i agree, he is amazing.
