Can I remove the workspaces button from unity-2d? The workspace switcher is super slow in unity-2d, and I don't want to use it (instead, using the ALT+CTRL+Arrows) but I don't want to accidentally click it.

I don't think there is a way to do that in either Unity 3d or unity 2d. Consider making a request on Ubuntu brain storm page.

I personally want more customizations on the dock, but as those are still work in progress, it may be some time before we see those features added.

Please see these guides on how to customize Unity 2D:
http://www.ubunturoot.com/2011/02/remove-and-rearrange-items-in-unity-2d.html
http://marianochavero.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/a-simple-gui-for-unity-2d-settings-ubuntu-11-04/

The first guide describes how to remove some items from the launcher, incl. the workspaces icon, and also how to change the background of the launcher.

The other guide is about a tool to control more common settings.

Greetings.
