If you are OK with the command line ffmpeg is very powerful and has many, many options. If you want a GUI have a look at winff which is a front end for ffmpeg.

thanks for that... the converted videos do work on my phone but there is no option to change the default resolution or the video quality or sound type(mp3,aac or amr).... anyways thanks for informing me about it...

Mobile media converter is pretty simple. I think Arista has presets for Ipod's and other devices. It doesn't have any resolution/sound options either though. Arista tries to set descent defaults for audio/video according to the selected device instead of just converting. It is already in the repos. There is also other presets you can add from their website.

I have used Winff but I was not happy with the quality of the video. I searched around and found that "Free Zune Video converter" works great under Wine. You can get it at,

I am very happy with the quality.

AShhab2010. I found something that works great for me. WINFF works but I was not happy with the quality of the results. I found a converter that produces a far superior video after the conversion. I got it from www.downloads.com. It works fine through Wine. It's called "Free Zune Video Converter". Check it out.

I use kdenlive because it opens .m4v files. It's a video editor really, so that's a bit of an overkill :) .
