Hi, my friend owns an electric guitar. He has ubuntu on his pc, what recommendations are there for a nice "music editor" program? I don't know how to describe what i'm looking for, but the sort of program that would be like

If gimp = play with and edit pictures, then this software would be the equal of gimp when it comes to music.

He has those pedals that you use for the guitar and what not, and I think he's looking for one software that would let him record his jamming sessions and edit them.

For basic recording and edits of a single instrument Audacity will be fine.

For multitrack stuff Jokosher would be a good start (if you get gstreamer errors switch all audio settings to default). For something with more features, look at jack plus Ardour or Qtractor. Hydrogen is good for making drum tracks and other sequencing.

You should also mention he will need a preamp if he wants to plug the guitar into the computer soundcard.
