View Full Version : [ubuntu] Webcam as CCTV

May 20th, 2011, 05:56 PM

I'd like to use my Logitech cam as a CCTV cam with a laptop running 11.04.
It will be a basic 'Spy' setup.

It will have to do one of the following:

- Record a movie all the time and save it to the internal HD
(as this requires quite some space, it would be cool if I can set the quality)

- It has to mopnitor a space and take pictures as soon as motion is detected and upload these to a remote server.

Anyone has any tips on this?

thnx for your prompt respons!
Indeed Zoneminder looks like what I am looking for.
But... sadly I just arrived at Ubuntu after 15 years of devoted OSX usage and I seem to get completly lost at setting up Zoneminder.

So far it also seems a little bit too advanced for what I need...

I am now looking into WXCAM-1.0.7, but I need to complie that, and I don't even know how to do THAT! hahaha.. well, it is sad actually...

I found this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1535947&page=2 to setup ZoneMinder.
But I seem to be stuck already.

Thnx for any help!

yeah... I saw that
I linked to that in my post before yours ;-)

I am pretty stuck still

Got the whole program runing now, but failing at getting the cam to work...

Is there no other viable option?
ZoneMinder seems to be way to much for a guy with one laptop and one cam.
