NUA LAE OS 11.0 "AIBELL" (www.facebook.com/pages/Nua-Lae-OS/227379087278702)

A brand-new, Ubuntu-based Linux distribution aimed at personal users.
The goal is to create a sleek, beautiful, functional, and user-friendly desktop for Linux newcomers and veterans alike.
Nua Lae will include Gnome 2 by default, and will bundle many useful programs and new defaults while trimming down on excessive package bloat.
Powered by an up-to-date kernel and presented with a unique look and feel, Nua Lae won't be your typical distro,
but it will still retain the familiarity that has made Ubuntu so successful.

Nua Lae is a very young project, still in its alpha development stage, and is in need of creative contributors.
Whether you're an artist, a programmer, or just someone with a question or an idea, we want to hear from you!

Just in time, the lack of Unbuntu-based distros was getting worrisome.

Your sarcasm was desperately needed, and your contribution is dearly appreciated.

Ubuntu is easy to remaster and that's how all the baby buntus were born!

So, I'd like to begin developing a distro based on Ubuntu, starting with 11.04 and tailing the Ubuntu release schedule by a few months tops. The project will be called Nua Lae (Irish for "New Day"), and each version will be codenamed after Celtic goddesses in alphabetical order (Aibell, Beira, Caer, etc.).

The project goal is to create a distribution that is easy to install and use, is simple and elegant in nature, and fully-featured out of the box without excessive bloatware. The default configuration will feature Gnome 2.x, Docky, and Compiz (if the hardware allows) out of the box. Up-to-date Liquorix kernels, new default programs, and some custom functions will help set Nua Lae apart from the crowd.

At the moment, it's just me, as the project is very new. I am currently working on preliminary artwork (the main logos have already been designed) and customizing a Virtualbox "dummy distro". I want this to be a community-driven project, so I am enlisting the help of anyone who wishes to offer their talents to the project. Any amount of involvement will get your name on the credits page, and all assistance is appreciated. I am especially in need of programmers who can develop post-install scripts and such, as I am not proficient enough to do something like that.

The Nua Lae project is currently hosted on Facebook (link (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nua-Lae-OS/227379087278702)), but I will have a website and blog up soon. I have logo PSDs and further information for anyone who is interested in contributing. If you have any further questions, you can PM me, write on the Facebook page wall, or simply reply to this thread.

If you aren't 100% set on building a distribution yourself, why not come help us over at Fuduntu instead? :)

I very much admire Fuduntu, and I do experiment with it on the side. If it weren't for Fedora's odd quirks, I'd be using it 24/7 and would love to come work with you guys. :)

Isn't Ubuntu Gnome Remix supposed to fill this niche?

Isn't Ubuntu Gnome Remix supposed to fill this niche?

Not really. As I understand it, UGR is a very young and unimaginative Gnome 3 variant. More power to them, but my project will be Gnome 2 with just a little bit of personality.

Frankly, you guys aren't going to talk me out of it. Even if Nua Lae doesn't get a huge userbase, I'll at least be using it to help spread Linux myself. When people ask about my desktop, I have a hard time selling it by telling them they're just a download and a couple hours of tweaking away from the same goodness.

@ OP ... Good luck with your project. To start a new distro or contribute to an existing one is a personal choice and I wish you the best of luck in this endeavor...

I'd highly recommend not making it green by default, as it would perhaps pigeonhole the distro's image. (I love Irish things, e.g. whiskey, beer, literature.)

As an Irish man, I love the idea of an Irish themed distro. Pity I am not a programmer or I would definately get involved.

The distro will most likely be Irish in name alone - the current color scheme is blues on grays. I take interest in Irish and Celtic culture, and thought it would be a fun and unique way to "brand" the project. :P

Programmers are welcome, but not required! I want this to be a community project, so any ideas or skills you have to offer are more than welcome. :)

You've definitely piqued my interest. I really love Ubuntu, but I'm less than thrilled with the direction in which it seems to be headed, hence my movement to Mint. One of the greatest things about Linux, however, is in its diversity. If one doesn't like the direction in which a particular distro is headed, one is free to spin off a fork - which Mint has done, and which you appear to be doing here. Ultimately, this actually serves to strengthen the Ubuntu branch.

I'll take a look at your Facebook page and website (when you get it started). I'm a novice programmer at best, but I would love to contribute in any way I can, even if only as a spelling and grammar checker! :p

That's great to hear! I'm sure you'll come up with some way to contribute to the project. I'll be posting specific requests for the community, and you never know if it'll be something you can tackle until you give it a shot. :)

I know you said you weren't going to be talked out of it, but the developers of the Elementary icon theme are just starting out on a 'Buntu-based distro that has *very* similar goals to yours, such as remixing Docky and making a very light and clean interface. It's here: http://elementaryos.org/ if you would like to check it out.

I have been watching Elementary's progress for a while. It is very nice, but it's a little TOO simplified for my taste. There's a fine line between "too functional" and "too basic", and I hope to walk that line as closely as possible.

Revamped the original post to make this more of a presentation and recruitment thread. Added link to Twitter.

I noticed you are using Gnome 2 for now. What are your plans once Gnome 2 is unavailable? Are you going to switch to Gnome 3 or use another desktop entirely? :)

In a future release, I will be switching over to Gnome 3 while retaining the option for a classic desktop (by then, KDE and lightweight variants should also be available). At the moment, I just don't think that Gnome 3 is mature enough for general use, particularly for users who want to customize and tweak their UI. I will be keeping an eye on Gnome 3's development, as I am painfully aware that Gnome 2 isn't exactly cutting-edge anymore.

Well, I'm glad you like it. It's based on a Celtic knot. I went through a silly amount of drafts before I came up with something I liked. :P

From a distance it reminds me of an atom, which is still neat :)
