That doesn't need software to download the pictures from the device, and preferably has no built-in HDD (but it doesn't matter), but has great image-stabilization (I have shaky hands.) And At least 10x Optical Zoom, and must accept up to 32GB SDHC or equiv. Should have good still pictures, and must perform well in both low-light and high-light situations, yet not be too big in size or price. And at least 720p.

This might be the best one for the price so far: http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028841&pathId=171&page=10

I bought this..

Sony HDRCX130EB Handycam C... £472.45

Be aware that it doesn't even come with a tiny "Starter" simcard though.

Twas another month before I could use it when I bought a class 10 32gb SD card for it

Unfortunately, putting your model into google gives all UK Prices and whatnot.

I live in the USA.

And it's no secret that JVC made the first consumer VHS Tape recorder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JVC#1970s_.E2.80.93_1980s

Pretty grainy from what I see here.

JVC has improved theirs: http://everio.jvc.com/2010lineup/feature/feature_02.html

Low Light is the enemy of all video recorders.

You also gleaned your low light info for that JVC camcorder from JVC's own site. They are obviously going to say their own product is Uber, they want to make a sale !!

Here's a shot of my new Camcorder against my old VX9000e (I used to video weddings & stuff) Which now lies rotting in the cupboard. I really shoulda sold a couple of years back.
