Hey, I am working on a distro of Ubuntu called Ubuntu Cross. This project will have a two-fold purpose. One, to be a Christian Ubuntu desktop. Two, to be easier to use for Windows users "Crossing" over to Ubuntu. This will mean that it will be kind of a "Christian Linux Mint" all though it will not be based on Mint. If anyone wants to help me make some "Ubuntu Cross" wallpapers, that would be great. I have a little digital photo editing experience, but if someone with more experience wants to take that on as a project, I would really appreciate it. I am not really aiming for an enterprise desktop as I don't know all what that entail, but if someone wants to work off of it when I'm done and create a "Ubuntu Cross Enterprise Edition" or something, that would be great. As far as what I'm including, I don't have it all pinned down exactly yet. At the basic level I was going to include some Bible software, office software, multimedia software, and a church projection program I found. Any thoughts? Are there any favorite apps you think I should include? :)

Isn't there already a Ubuntu Christian edition?

There is, but it seems it hasn't been updated for some time and apparently the update manager isn't working. There had been some discussion about making a Christian Linux Mint (check it out at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1363077), but there are some issues with that. And Ubuntu CE isn't exactly user friendly besides all that.

Why do you need to make a Christian-themed Ubuntu release? Why not just release a set of wallpapers, a few software metapackages, some GTK themes, etc…

Unless your 'distro' will do something fundamentally different from Ubuntu, it probably has no reason to exist.

I am trying to making it easier to use than the traditional Gnome-based Ubuntu. That was the second goal of my distro. I am kind of aiming for a windows look and "it just works" feel. I attached a screen-shot of my progress so far (please excuse the task-bar having three menus; I was testing them). Any thoughts?

Try doing the above suggested, but for mint. It's got a look more like what you're going for.

I was trying to take all the more advanced features and add-ons (Emerald, Compiz, Docky, Dockbar X, Gnomenu, and the like) that normally only more advanced users could use and make them accessible to the complete newbies. Basically I am aiming for something easy and clean, yet powerful.

Hey, I'd be interested in testing your respin. One thing you might try making a transformation script to transform normal Ubuntu in to your Ubuntu, just a simple .sh you know.

You need approval from Canonical to use the name "Ubuntu" in your distro.

All right, so I will have to get approval before I can release it publicly right? Thanks for letting me know; I'm pretty new to this stuff.

You can find all the details here: http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/trademarkpolicy

Until you get approval just call its something like JCuntu or something. :)

Unless your 'distro' will do something fundamentally different from Ubuntu, it probably has no reason to exist.

a) Ubuntu Christian Edition appears to be dormant. It probably is a casualty of the earthquake/tsunami;

b) Ubuntu Christian Edition tried to include things used by individuals, churches, SOHO, and non-profits users;

c) The point is to have something that will automatically install applications that Christians (theoretically) use on a daily basis. Initially, this is strictly a desktop for individuals.

d)If somebody steps forward and creates Ubuntu Cross Enterprise Edition, then there will be a version for churches, and religiously orientated non-profits. This does not preclude the desktop for individuals from including OpenLP, or similar church worship software;

Do you guys know of a good Internet filter? I can't seem to find a way to install Dansguardian, and other filters I've tried are insufficient.

Oh wow... ninja quote change... So if you quote a post, and the original post changes the quote also changes... too weird...

Hola,

Am as well intending to prove a Christian Angelic Distribution. It shall utilize things similar renaming the "Daemon" process' and translating them to be "Priestly" process' & various other things. Am working to prove a website & studying alots to learn the technical aspects to Linux Gnome based operating systems & networking. Am as well very skilled with multiple linguistics & have proven that Hebrew has no pronoun. And in fact such signifies that "Jesus" spoke with non pronouns and that potentially such was a later addition to the earths' vocabulary.
Am interested what anybody might have to suggest about AngelicoLinux. You can discover a thread about such at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1764528 . Wish you the greatest "drunkongod". Just ask if you are in necessity for assistance.

Lets not drift to far here everyone, FernandoTertiary (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=1290369) was posting about a separate project you can discuss here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1764528. This thread is about the Ubuntu Cross edition.

AngelicoLinux is no Protestant hack job, & though perhaps various ideas similar other organizations attempting to prove similar Christian ideologies, it should be phrased and for the intent that for Angelico Linux the primary focus pertains specific Catholic & archaic religious principals, & is a organization intended to be placed on a foundation that expresses the intelligence acquired from learning, patience, & discipline.

Gracias

FernandoTertiary was posting about a separate project you can discuss here:

FernandoTertiary has provided more details, and more specifics about the proposed NEW operating system in threads about Ubuntu Cross, than in threads that were specifically created to discuss that proposal. It is almost as if s/he declines to answer both major and minor questions about his/her proposal in threads specifically created to discuss the proposal.

I'm neither religious nor culturally Protestant, but that's extraordinarily bigoted and would've been met with the strongest reaction (violence) in the not so distant past.

Too much talk of religion - take it elsewhere.
