I like Unity - I've tried to like KDE, on Kubuntu, PCBSD and Opensuse but failed. I liked Gnome 2 but felt it wasted screen space - but I like Unity, a lot. I had a few problems with 11.04, but not related to unity.

I've read on the forums complaints about customization, so I thought I'd screen-shot my slightly customized Unity - maybe yours is better?

Also any feature you'd like to see? Mine:

- Screen previews
- Possibly something like the tracker on BEOS to get between opened applications on the top panel
- The applications menu to follow the gnome menus for example on mine there is no item for Windows applications - there is in Gnome 2

Not bad, but customizing (unlike KDE 4 and to a lesser degree Gnome 2.x) is at present not one of Unity's strong features...
However, I do like Unity, once I got the base configuration done; a noobe would have had no chance getting it to work properly. But the concept is ok, well it's almost awesome, and come 11.11 and especially 12.04 it should have established itself as THE Linux desktop.
I just don't understand why so few people try it out in detail, a clear majority of Ubuntu users seems to dislike it profoundly.
Should be interesting to check out this forum in 6 months time...):P

Its actually one of my personal themes. The GTK2 widgets are just clearlooks with the colors changed. The Metacity theme is one I have been working on. Its work in progress, but coming a long smoothly.

Havent decided if I am gonna release it to the public. I normally do post them on gnome-look, but this time I am leaning toward keeping this one as my personal theme. Not sure yet tho.

Frogs Hair, that's a good looking desktop. I've switched to Xubuntu but this makes me want to install Unity on my distro-hopping partition and really work with it. I was quickly reading through the two links. I didn't see where they explained where to install your theme and the "black & white" dock?

It is just a GTK theme that happens to work with Unity (some don't) and I added a picture to Elementary Nautilus from backgrounds & emblems . The panel appears darker because of the wall paper and I have a horizontal Conky not in the screen shot.

How do you do a thumbnail?

If you use an image uploading service like omploader or imgur, they give you a thumbnail.

You can "nest" the img and url bbcode tags, like
[img]path_to_example-thumb.png ('http://example.com/image.png')

using a smaller image in the img tag, and the larger one as the link.

If you install the extra plugins package for compiz you'll get a "Wallpaper"-plugin in CCSM that you can enable and configure to accomplish this.

You also need to disable Show Desktop in gconf-editor, otherwise Gnome-desktop will cover up the compiz-wallpaper, you'll also loose your desktop icons by doing this. There is no easu way to keep icons on the desktop and getting different wallpapers at the same time.

But dropping in an image that isn't even useful as a preview is a bigger waste of space, IMO.

I used a dock prior to Unity and I would to see some similar options , like the ability to change launcher color , size , and customize icons . Some of the luncher shortcuts that are appearing on various sites should become default.

Launcher colour: Going to be implemented for 11.10, I think.
Size: install CCSM (apt://ccsm) , Unity plugin, Icon size.
Custom icons: Unity conforms with your selected icon set now. My favourite is the Faenza (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Faenza?content=128143) icon set.

Launcher will be fixed. Mark Shuttleworth said on that issue that allowing users to move it would conflict with the design goals. Sure its possible Canonical may change its mind down the road but I wouldn't bet on it.

But he's right - on a wide screen and most are even on a 4:3 screen the side is the best place for the launcher.

Obviously as it's open-source if a hacker wants to move it it could be moved - but why would you want to?

Saw this interesting proposal today:

From this thread:

There seems to be some movement towards flexibility with Unity.
Could be very interesting in 6 mo. to a year.

I'm personally loving it and am looking forward to the progress In Oneiric

I am having problems with the launcher and icons, mostly... I installed a set and tried adding a couple launchers in there and the icons won't stick now. http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/Dngrs_1/argh.gif

Oh, and has anyone noticed that the top bar gets corrupted nearly every time you make changes via CCSM?

I have my icons set to 32 already , with the dock you cold go even smaller . I like the way AwOken icons look on the panel , but I used to make my own dock icons on gimp that could be easily changed without have to jump through hoops.

shrunk icons to 32.
changed wallpaper

That was answered already: compiz extra plugins includes wallpaper. You won't have icons on your desktop, but if you have the Unity Launcher bar, you won't need them anyway.

I like most of what unity has done, once I read how to use it. It's not intuitive but intuitive is over rated. The one thing I don't get is why don't we show the menu at the top all the time. I should be able to read a menu before I move my mouse to it. Seems that would fit more with Fitt's Law and at no cost.

I understand hiding the menu when that area becomes the title bar but when it is doing nothing else the entire point of having the menu at the top is Fitt's Law.
