online upgrade to 11.04 desktop isn't right

i did the online upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. after a restart, the screen was brown & showed no icons.
by clicking on various areas of the screen, I was able to reveal the desktop including icons.
However, when I click on any icon the screen just sort of jumps around & won't let me do anything.
Please help me.

If you don't know of anything in 11.04 you absolutely need, my advice is to stay with 10.10 for at least a month more.
