This is probably my most used keystroke. I can't believe how many people don't know about it but i find it so handy. As I only use the top panel of Gnome, some people who use my computer get confused as how to switch between windows. I tell them to use alt-tab. I have to explain it to them every time, even though i say alt-tab :P Is there an actual name for this keystoke/action?

Alt-tab. Maybe Switch app? Switch Window. Tab Window.

It's been around since Windows 1.0 and I'm pretty sure even before that. I'm not sure if its ever had a definitive name.

Its one of the whole suite of keyboard shortcuts that have been around for years and pre-date the mouse (the mechanical kind :) ) Allowing for navigation in a window/pane application environment.

Generally the 'Alt' key modifier acted on the window and the 'Ctrl' modifier acted on the pane.

Alt-tab switches between windows. Ctrl-Tab switches between panes in windows.

Alt-F4 closes the window. Ctrl-F4 closes the pane in the window.

I'm sure with a little Googling you can find all the others that mostly still work in windowed environments. :D
