I want to try out Gnome Shell. I heard that it messed some guy's computer up. Will installing Gnome Shell mess my Ubuntu 11.04 up? Unity's already pretty buggy and I just want something that looks better.

If you want to try Gnome3 I suggest downloading and burning Fedora 15 LiveCD, its sweet.

I would recommend you try the gnome 3 shell on something more stable like Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

If you're willing to do an additional install anyway you might as well try G3 on Ubuntu first. A few weeks ago we were behind the curve but now I think we've got a G3 version of Natty that is every bit as good as fedora or suse.

UNetbootin will work with just about any linux iso.

Oh, here's what can be done with G3 shell on ubuntu, just like the other distros.

I found the Gnome Shell demo on SuSE to be a very painless way to experience Gnome Shell. It gives instructions on how to make a bootable USB stick. Worked fine for me.

Unfortunately, Ubuntu is not yet available with Gnome 3 backend so you cannot get a functional Shell without some fuss and compromises. I found it interesting to see what was in the SuSE repertoire anyway.

Is there a way to get the gnatty without installing a new operating system?

Yes, at the core it's basically what Ubuntu Gnome Remix (UGR) is going to be, with just a few minor changes/additions. It's a custom.iso, not a distro. In the very 1st post in that thread is the information & link(s) to make your own.

gNatty is more an ad hoc virtual community of a few people that are interested in and/or like Gnome 3.0 shell and want to support it's adoption by Ubuntu users. Our contribution was basically just assembling the pieces and putting out a live iso so people could preview it and see that it's not handicapped in comparison to other distros (Fedora, Suse, Arch). It is rough around the edges but is as stable as Ubuntu 11.04 is. It is not recommended for anybody that isn't already familiar with using Ubuntu and used to running Alpha/Beta/Rc releases.

Hi, I tried 3 times to install gnome shell with no success, then I put ubuntu in virtualbox so I could work on it with out messing up my current ubuntu. It much safer that way until you figure out exactly how to do it, also this was a few weeks ago it might be more stable now.:)
