I downloaded ubuntu, wrote it onto a cd, tried to install it over windows xp home and I'm having errors.

Is there any way I can delete the hard disk so it's totally dead. Then install using the CD I burned the ISO to?

Yes you can. Use Gparted to reformat the hard drive first: then install ubuntu. Look on the CD under Systems > Administration > gparted or some kind of partition manager.

I should add that the computer has a virus I can't remove.

Oh yes, most definitely you should be repartitioning and formatting the drive.

A Windows virus won't prevent you from wiping the hard drive from within Ubuntu.

Is there any other way to delete the files on the hard disk?

What is this partitioning mumbo jumbo? Walk me through it please?

alternatively you can create a new partition table this will delete all partition on the disk
if there are any files on there you wanted to keep you can copy them off the disk 1st you may want to scan them with clamav though
you could possibly use clamav to remove the virus on windows (if you would like to try to keep windows)
