No, because a. I wouldn't be surprised if some people's brains weren't as powerful as 800Mhz ARMs, and b. I thought everyone knew that there was money in cellphone cracking? It's an identity thief's dream.

No.

I don't know this 16:9 tv show, but it looks like 60 minutes type garbage.
The article is misleading/unclear: the video simply shows what a bot slave can be used for in relation to sms once it has become a slave.

There is nothing to indicate that the slave was captured via sms. i.e. the attack is NOT the smses. They are just functionality after a successful attack through malware in an app, webpage, etc...

You don't need to guess, when you give the exact link that I did.

You may not have looked at the entire article.

You seem to be a bit confused.

You linked to the index page, and Macskeeball linked to the actual article.

Exactly. You linked to a news front page that had other stories on it and will likely have a different set of stories on it tomorrow, etc.

I wouldn't say it freaks me out, but I'm pretty impressed that hacks can be done via sms. Unfortunately they didn't explain it in depth enough for me to really understand how it works though.

I liked the "I don't have a credit card." Comment, because I don't have one either. :P

I have cards, but sure wouldn't have that info on my dang phone.

Some ways to prevent cell hacking can be easily done by turning off Bluetooth. Even with most all phones having WiFi these days, bluetooth is still the #1 way to access a device. Some phones allow you to also turn off WiFi when you dont want to use it.
Lastly and believe me this still happens, people tend to forget that even in this modern age of technology. Most information is gathered from just snooping over ones shoulders when they are not paying attention.
Follow these simple habits and your phone will be safe. ;-)

Possibly (I had to guess which article you meant, for starters), but it looks to me like the whole article is based Weidman's presentation, which has been very poorly represented there.

Actually, I'm confused.

The actual program went further, to discuss geo tagging of photos, and how it can be used to find out within 15 feet, where the photo was taken.

That part makes me uneasy.

The program took a racy photo, that a lady had posted to an adult dating service, and extracted the GPS coordinates from the photo, and found her address.

I'm glad I have an ancient Nokia that just makes calls. If I want internet on the move I'd use my netbook, it is much better online experience than any phone can offer and relatively secure. If I want to take pictures I have a 5MP pocket camera that knocks the spots of most phone cameras.

Nope, digital media is just a big database... You do anything online and it becomes part of that database.... there are all kinds of people out there who want to exploit that database... Even this forum is collecting information about you.

Well obviously if the phone has geo-tagging enabled then that is pretty trivial to do. It should never be enabled by default IMO. If I was posting a picture online taken with my phone I would first strip it of all metadata. I find the article is quite stupid actually. Typical technique to get lots of traffic, publish something that will scare people. It seems to be working pretty well seeing as it ended up getting posted here.

For those of you outside Canada, Global is a TV network that is not a reliable source for any information. They sensationalize everything and rarely report any facts. Think "National Enquirer" or some such yellow rag.

The Sun in the UK is owned by Rupert Murdoch, just like Fox. In the UK we have Sky News, same guy.

Just one more good reason to not have a cell phone.

Correction its one more reason to not have a "Smart Phone" your still fine with a basic cell phone, but that said, just don't store any personal information in a smart phone and you should be fine and if you can and do pay in cash for the service then the company won't have your credit card number and thieves can't steal it from them. ;)
