Hardware is GB-8Ipe1000 pro-g m/b, p4 2.6 cpu, nvidia 6800, 1 gb ram, 160 sata hd.

During install, goes quite a way through then probs start.

code: Bad EIP value
EIP: [<66726570>] 0x66726570 SS:ESP 0068:44699d60
CR2: 0000000066726570
---[ end trace 5045eee9721cd669 ]---
udevd-work [81] : 'sbin/modprobe bv pci: "too long to type" unexpected exit with status 0x0009

firewire_core: created device fw0: FUID 000d610a00088d20, S400

Then it stops forever.

DVD integrity test gives me same thing.

Have tested this disk on a core 2 machine and the disk is ok...works

Any thoughts on how to get 11.04 onto the P4 machine?

Many thanks in advance!

from another source:
"a corrupt eip value signifies a instruction that went wrong, could you
try installing it without modem? This has to do with one of your pci
cards."

and reply:
There is no modem installed. Only components on that machine are Mainboard, Nvidia 6800 AGP vid card, and ram.
I have also tested that DVD on my main, everyday machine and it boots cleanly to the "live" cd, both to live, and
the image integrity test.

Not sure what to proceed with. Have posted this issue at the Ubuntu forum for the crew to look at. Have also now tested
with the new mint dvd and the zorin dvd (both of course are based on the new ubuntu and having the same problem, verbatim."

Still seeking resolution.

Based on the integrity test hanging, I think these are the steps for you to do:

1) Use Bit torrent to download the Natty 11.04 ISO

2) Either Burn a new DVD with the new ISO at the slowest speed the during software offers, OR make a LiveUSB using the ISO.

You can do all of this from an older LiveCD, or another PC.

When you boot from the 11.04 LiveCD/LiveUSB, you may have an upgrade path offered in the 'install 11.04'.

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/874/upgradetonatty.png

If this is not offered, if you have your data in a separate '/home' partition you can reinstall 11.04 over your 10.10 '/' partition and be sure to not format the '/home' partition:

First, define your '/' (root) partition:

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/7520/04allocdrivespace2.png

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/9673/05allocdrivespace3.png

Then define your '/home' partition:

IF YOU ARE DOING AN UPGRADE, DO NOT FORMAT THIS PARTITION!

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6828/07allocdrivespace5.png

This separates your documents and 'stuff' from the system files and 'stuff' in the '/' partition.

p.s. To learn how to move your '/home' into it's own partition: SeparateHomePartition (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome)

try installing it without modem? This has to do with one of your pci

During the alpha test phase of Natty, we had a number of systems where the install would only work when neither of the 'Download during install' options were checked.

You may need to do the same, and then load those pieces after a successful install.

I have tested this DVD on my primary machine and core2 box, and it has no problems. The issue seems to be something they have "written out" of the new version that supported my old hardware.

Will upgrading and saving my home dir make any dif if this hardware issue stands true?

The DVD in question was burned in brasero and slowest speed (4x) and is indeed an intact valid image

is there someway I can determine the part of my mainboard or is it the 6800 card that natty doesn't like?

If you are convinced the DVD is fine and that the system in question is also reading it fine, then doing the upgrade using that DVD and not selecting the 'download during install' may get you where you need to be.

The separation of '/' (root) and '/home' makes upgradeing (and downgrading) easier for the long term.

If it is anything, it is the 6800 card. You can try popping that out for the install, and then putting it back in and loading the nvidia drivers then.

I use nvidia on all my Ubuntu PCs - and I never have issues. But lots of other folks have right at first.

Am not trying to even do upgrade. Clean install is preferred on the box in question as it is my test machine.

Just trying simple install of any way possible to get 11.04 on the drive. Never get option"download during install" Don't get that far.

you can also try installing 10.10 and then using the ubuntu 11.04 cd do the upgrade option.

not sure why either you are having those problems..

Just like someone else said, it's most likely your Nvidia 6800.
This person is getting the same error as you, you both have Nvidia 6800 cards and using Ubuntu 11/Linux Mint 11.

USB flash drives can turn bad. A new one allowed me to install Natty to my netbook.

Hi I am running into a very similar error. The install hangs on firewire_core: created device fw0: GUID 00023c003101b099, s400

I also had a Nvidia 6600, which is similar to the OPs setup. I also happened to have an older Radeon card sitting around. Switching the two out didn't effect anything. Sadly without an onboard video hookup these were my only two card options and leaves me unable to boot without a video card.

I am rather newish to linux stuff. Is there a way to package the necessary drivers into the image? Or boot options you can pass to the kernel to not load or install the graphics driver? Thanks
