I just installed 11.4 on my laptop. At first everything was working fine. The touchpad was working. Soon after installation I was asked to install the ATI proprietary drivers for my Radeon 5470. I used my fn+f7 key to disable my touchpad to see if it work, sure enough the icon showed up showing that the touchpad was disabled and it didn't work anymore. Then I restarted my computer to apply the driver I installed and the updates. The ati driver completely messed up the desktop manager and disabled unity so I disabled the driver and installed a driver from the amd website. After the restart, the touchpad never worked again even if I press fn+f7 again (icon showing that touchpad is enabled popped up).

Solved. Didn't really do anything eventually, the touchpad just started working normally again.
