I tried this command:

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential

And got these lines:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package build-essential

Why the package not found. How can I fix this?

I don't know why it's not being found , but build-essential in the Synaptic Package Manager . It can install it from there.

I used both of these commands sequentially -

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install build-essential

but still same result.

First, Intrepid has already reached its EOL, meaning it is no longer supported with updates.

However, if you still have the CD which you installed it with you can try this:

put the CD in the drive while running Intrepid and then run the following commands:

sudo apt-cdrom add
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
Let us know if this works for you.
