Ok i was reading about alien, and i gad a crazy idea, what if just for fun you converted the entire ubuntu distro to rpm with alien or the entire fedora distro to deb; would it still work the same?

I heard that deb based distros and rpm based distros put things in different places, but if you convert the whole distro, shouldn't everything still be in the same place as the original?

No it wouldn't. Certain packages would break and you could no longer use the Ubuntu repositories so I don't see the point.

That's why no one's doing it. Its too much of a hassle.

the only point would be to see if it could be done. as I said "just for fun"

from a technical viewpoint alien isn't perfect, it's not able to convert all packages correctly. last night i tried using it with a simple app and the resulting rpm crashed fedora.

Works perfectly on normal packages 99.9% of the time...

System critical packages... not really.
