I want to calibrate my laptop's display for better/more accurate colors for photography, But i'm not sure how to, I tried downloading a few different apps and messing with settings/color charts found on the Internet but i really don't know what i'm doing. What app should i be using and what should i do to calibrate my display? I've been reading about calibration/color management on the Internet and it all seems very complicated, Can anyone here who uses Linux/Ubuntu for Photography give me some help/advice please?

Well, usually you need some hardware and matching software to calibrate accurately.

Though careful attention to detail and experimenting may achieve almost as good with software alone...

A low tech work-around is to adjust basic gamma, brightness and contrast then use your DSLR as a tool to tweak further.

Set your cameras white balance to 6500k and focus on your monitors screen then slightly blur focus.

Take a picture of the monitor and review the shot's RGB Histogram.

Adjust the monitors gamma, contrast, brightness as before and take another shot.
Repeat until the red, blue and green histograms of your pictures peak at the same levels.
Once this happens save the profile you have created for the monitor.

Get yourself a Spyder or an X-Rite i1 Display, install GNOME Color Manager and just use it. Old review/guide is here (http://libregraphicsworld.org/articles.php?article_id=11).
