Hi,

this post is to inform the interested of a new distribution in the making project Vanillux!

Here are some of the hightlights (more available on vanillux.org (http://vanillux.org)):

We are using APT but intend to build our own packages and have our own repository!
We are a rolling release
We use Gnome3
We support KVM as our main Hypervisor
We try to keep the base install as simple as possible

We are looking for voloteers

Thank you

Typo in the second paragraph of the main page, 'beggin' should be begin.

Looks interesting, I'm going to keep an eye on it and hope it doesn't turn into Yet Another Ubuntu remix.

Not that many voloteers left in the world sadly...

Ubuntu remixes use the base of the popular operating system but they select and modify packages depending on the user's needs.

Its proven to be very successful - look at Linux Mint. Canonical is no longer the only game in town.

With Cannonical & Mark Shuttleworth dropping Gnome for Unity

Really? Do you have evidence to support this?

Hi,

we are sorry for the 404s,

being a new project our site evolves rapidly and we needed to take it down to move to a bigger container with also more bandwidth due to the high amount of visitors

Thank you to try again

How do we download the ISO? your ftp and http links are "hollow"--no iso in the folders.

Well, as soon as you brought Gnome 3 into it, that killed it for me!

Why? Gnome 2 is dead, if you want Unity, KDE, XCFE or LXDE then just use Ubuntu.

Have you tried Gnome 3? so much more intuitive and fast compared to Unity--overall good experience on the desktop. Give it a try, you will be amazed.

Hi again,

So i would like tp say that we have to a testing distro together. We have yet to make a CD, we are working on that amongst other things.

Until we make such a CD, we would like to offer the following installation instructions:
http://wiki.vanillux.org/wiki/HOW-TO_Install_Vanillux

Also i would like to again say that we are still looking for more volunteers, mostly people with knowledge with debian-cd/debian-installer, DAK and apt programmers.

Thank you

Will update again on release of CD's

What exactly do you mean by this? Are you just packaging additional apps the base disro does not have (Debian), or are you building the entire repo from the ground up?

That would be very ambitious, to say the least.

Their website is very amateur looking. And their screenshots page show features of Gnome 3 and nothing of their own doing. No thanks.

Hi again,

For now we forked Ubuntu as our base. But we have gnome3, gnome-fallback and the apps you see running in the screenshots working.

And the screenshots are ours, not some photo-shopped images. You can install Vanillux from our wiki, and the result will be what you saw in the screenshots.

Thank you for your interest.

I wasn't stating that the screenshots were not your, I was simply saying that they do not demonstrate anything different from a standard stock GNOME 3 instance.

Before I'd even consider it, I want to see what you do different from other options out there. You have to convince me why I would give Vanillux a try.

Then perhaps it's the slogan that's bothering me, "More Power". From a vanilla core? Hmmm...

Hi,

so yes for the past few weeks we have been building our repo from the ground up, at this point we host about 3000 packages (40% debian 50% ubuntu 9%ppa's 1% us). At the end you end up with a working gnome3, vlc , chomium, libreoffice (from the repo, not in the base install, same for flash).

Thank you

We haven't really picked a slogan yet, and by more power we dont mean cpu iterations but: more power in your hands, freedom kinda thing, by the fact that we encourage the user to push his computer to the limit.

please have a look at http://wiki.vanillux.org/wiki/Vanillux_manifesto
