See here for hardware requirements:

You should consider installing Unity-2D which might work on your hardware (available in the repositories).

Thanks. This worked for me too, and it also answered the question that had been nagging me: viz., since my 5-3/4-year-old IBM T42 laptop lacks the necessary hardware for Unity 3D, what will I do when 11.10 comes out and lacks the Ubuntu Classic desktop environment?

But I find Unity 2D even less appealing to me than Unity 3D, so all this helps to confirm my plans to shift to something like Xubuntu or Mint following the 11.10 release.:(

I am glad this also worked for you. Whilst it is apparently true that the Classic desktop will be removed on 11.10, Gnome3 may well make an appearance. However, I also wonder how that will fare with older systems. We shall have to wait and see I suppose.

If you are interested in lighter versions, take a look at Lubuntu as well.
