"8.Linux threatens Windows. Even though MS fiercely denies this, any sane person has to agree that Linux is making huge inroads and at a rapid pace. Hindsight will show that the tipping point was reached in 2005, and the adoption of Linux in 2006 is increasing. Ubuntu Linux now has more than 2 million users, and Ubuntu is one of more than 200 Linux distributions. "

The article is a tad biased, although I tend to agree they will fail eventually. It was nice, earlier today, I was helping my dad play with his breezy box at home. One comment, "this is fun, I don't want to use windows anymore" was good to hear. I think if people get a little help at the get go, ordinary tasks are easier in Ubuntu. (barring exotic hardware, running windows games...). But for surfing, burning, reading pdfs, watching video, listening to music, etc. Once your codecs are in, everything shines.

Well, the estimated number of total Linux users is about 20-25 million afaik, so it's not impossible.

Since then [October 2004], the always-free Linux distribution has won 2 million to 3 million users worldwide, most of them individual desktop users, according to Canonical Ltd

2 million is .03% of the total world population. That's a very small percentage.

And it's not as if all 200 other Linux distributions have similar numbers. Ubuntu is #1 at DistroWatch after all, which doesn't mean it's necessarily the most used, but VideoLinux (currently #100 at DistroWatch) probably does not have anywhere near the same number of users Ubuntu has.

True, but the whole of earth's population doesn't have 1 pc each. How many PC users/owners are there on earth? How many share machines?

2 million seems like a good start to me. :)

If only there was some way of counting us. Any ideas?

The truth is nobody knows.

Well, with the world-wide trend to more and more observe and monitor citizens the intelligence services will have exact numbers in a couple of years.
