Imagine an application that could do video-, voice-, IRC- and ordinary chat (all protocols), Twitter, Facebook and similar microblogging-tech; all in an easily extensible and modular framework.

Sort of like the VLC of social-apps.

Why doesn't it exist? :)

I know choice is good, but the amount of projects focusing on only one of the above aspects is just staggering...

Yes, I know I can't do better myself :(

Empathy takes care of all the chat protocols, but why do we need micro-blogging together with IM? It will just make a confusing interface.

Just use a web browser with a bookmark toolbar and tabs.

Tweetdeck, it does Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Googlebuzz, Linkedln and Forusquare.

Might not have a browser open. I might be working in an office app and want it to notify me of every update.

Then they need to add IRC and video/audio chat to Tweetdeck. :)
