Hello,

the title says everything. How many are the users per year of ubuntu os life? I think an interesting query.

For me is almost five years(since end of 2005 as a user and middle 2006 as a forum member)! Ubuntu was young and now it has grown up! What about you?
Take as reference year the one which corresponds to the date you joined the ubuntu forums.

Regards!

Joined 2005 when I tried Ubuntu 5.04. Before then I was a hard core SuSE user for many years.

I joined the forums in the year 2651. My time machine is running great, and I just wanted to say that next year will definitely be the year of the Linux desktop. For reals this time!

2009, I was a big Linux newbie then lol. Probably still am, but not as bad. Learned a lot during that year, but it seems that the number of enlightening technical debates have fallen since.

Hello,

oh! First of thank you very much for every single response! I was watching popping the one poll after the other, and it occurred to me to create this one!

I joined the forums in the year 2651. My time machine is running great, and I just wanted to say that next year will definitely be the year of the Linux desktop. For reals this time!

Every single answer is acceptable, I have to say that I enjoyed a lot the spirit of the answers of every single ubuntu member. That's our community! Unique!

<---- look over there, it says right under my name.
But I'll vote anyway.

Thank you very much!

<------------------ 2008, it seemed longer but I guess time has gone by slooow.

Time passes by differently to every person, yet it seems that the older you get the quicker the time passes by! You are young then, and I'm old! No really, I'm a member since 2006!

did you make the 2012 and up choices just because or are you letting this poll go on indefinitely?

The latter, yet even now, every single answer is acceptable. Why to create a closing date? After all the majority seems to choose the date they really joined the forums, so the results are more or less the same! The entire thread was created under simple, pure and sincere curiosity... and because I have never created a poll before. And to have a small discussion. Every single one is free to express one's opinions!

In the year twenty-one oh-one. I remember it well. War was beginning.

And in the end we lived happily ever after?!

2006. I have been in a world without Windows for nearly 5 years.

+1, yet today I had to find out a way on how a windows machine would be capable of connecting to a *nix server via putty while forwarding X11. Yet, I get your point.

2006, can't even remember the first version of Ubuntu I used...

Oh, on the contrary, I remember pretty well, it was breezy, yet Dapper was the one that made me really active.

Latter end of 2nd quarter 2006. I think it was 6.06 Dapper Drake I just know it was great to have an OS other than Windows but, I remember it didn't play well with my system but, I stuck with it as hard as it was.

It's got progressively miles better with each release & 11.04 plays perfect here on the exact same comp I started with back then except got a new graphics card & bigger lcd monitor :)

Asking people when they joined the forums is kind of, well, you can see when people joined. ;) But I guess it gives us a reason to talk about it.

I tried the first ubuntu (4.10) when it first came out. I kept a dual boot for a while, (still do) but became a "full time" linux user with Feisty Fawn 7.04. But since then, windows is only used for a couple games I love.

I know some people don't like to dual boot, but what the heck, how long does it take to reboot to play a couple games? Windows is good for something. But the second I'm done playing games, I'm booting back into linux.

I personally do not dual boot, but I instruct my friend to do thus for all of his non game tasks. He does not like to reboot though and does not heed my warning. (Just finished reinstall infected Vista from the factory image for the third time...)

I would install Microsoft Security Essentials on his machine if I were you. It's free, lightweight, and in my experience works pretty well.

Good point. I will do that. And make sure he doesnt disable UAC, or even set it up so he needs to type so he thinks for a moment before he does it. :) (and no, im within my rights to do something like that, im not being a jerk, hes a good friend of mine)

I don't charge my good friends and family, obviously. But if you call me and I don't know you, you pay. But at least my fees are reasonable.

Hello,

Asking people when they joined the forums is kind of, well, you can see when people joined. ;) But I guess it gives us a reason to talk about it.

I tried the first ubuntu (4.10) when it first came out. I kept a dual boot for a while, (still do) but became a "full time" linux user with Feisty Fawn 7.04. But since then, windows is only used for a couple games I love.

One of the oldest of veterans! Since 2004... 8 years is a lot of time to stick on a forum. And the first one voting.

Concerning dual booting and games just to propose wine as an alternative, yet the truth is that is not always the best alternative. At least there is a wealth list of games that play pretty decently.

I do not know if this can be linked or not, yet even though the forums might not be so indicative of how famous ubuntu becomes, that poll might show a trend. It seems though, that many people have not joined ubuntu exactly the time they first installed it on their pc.

The trend -up to now- shows that 2006 was the year with the most users joining the forums. 18 users at the time of writing and almost 1/4 of the voters out of 74.

And...since >2012 choice made an impression, I would like to add that, according to interest, the poll can go on indefinitely.

I avoided using the option of including the names of the users. Knowing the general behavior of the forum I was expecting those that were going to choose >2012 to be a very small minority, that would add a nice variety to all those that would choose the year they truly joined the forums.

Thanks again for the interest,
Regards!

Hello,

it seems that 2006 was a golden year for ubuntu forums and ubuntu in general.

I have to add also, that I was impressed seeing in ubuntu experience survey a similar question which was about: since when are you using ubuntu! My impression has to do with the timing.

Thank you for all your interest up to now,
Regards!

Have him install Windows in a virtual machine inside Ubuntu. Then after all the updates are in, and he has everything installed and working the way he likes, export it or make a snapshot of it. That way if he has problems he doesn't have to go all the way back, he can go back to a completely new install, but a clean install of everything.
This link (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows) works for XP, if he has a Windows disk it should work for any version.

2008 with 8.04. Windows had been frustrating me with it's inability to stay clean dispite my more than adequate maintenance, and so I ditched it. I've been going back and forth for gaming/actual computing since then, but with my increasing skills in computers and the maturing of Wine, I may be able to stay with Ubuntu permanently this time!

I jointed the second time in 2007. I was a member for a few years before that; however, I was a fan-boy and elitist. In 2007 I decided to abandon the old identity; because, I matured a little and I was embarrassed by my old posts.
