note: this isnt intented as a howto, it just lists what i did. dont do this!

being fed up with unity and particularly the fact it cant be customized to my liking i decided to uninstall the unity related packages i could find and install awn instead

removed the following:
ubuntu-desktop will be removed
unity will be removed
unity-asset-pool will be removed
unity-common will be removed
unity-place-applications will be removed
unity-place-files will be removed

installed:

avant-window-navigator (version 0.4.1~bzr822-0ubuntu3) will be installed
avant-window-navigator-data (version 0.4.1~bzr822-0ubuntu3) will be installed
awn-applet-animal-farm (version 0.4.1~bzr1507-0ubuntu1) will be installed
awn-applet-awn-notification-daemon (version 0.4.1~bzr1507-0ubuntu1) will be installed

added avant-window-navigator to startup apps
rebooted
result: perfectly working desktop with awn and no unity bits. 2-3 warnings about missing packages via libnotify, guess i have to find more packages to remove

someone should make a cleanbuntu where u can install the DE/dock/etc of ur liking

You really shouldn't do that approach!
