Presently, the vertical menu bar seems to exhibit intellihide behavior. The bar is always visible if no application is open.
It is possible to hide the menu bar at all times until the mouse is passed to the left?

Which version of Ubuntu is this? Are you talking about Unity?

Does the 'ccsm' section here, help you?

Yes, I am asking this question about Unity.
I've looked for the ccsm section but can't seem to find it.

To be exact, "Install ccsm and tweak the dock settings" ;-)

Yes, have ccsm installed. I can't seem to find anything there to accomplish autohide of menubar in Unity.
Perhaps this can be accomplished with the gconf-editor but can't find it there either.

It's in the Ubuntu Unity Plugin's settings (in CCSM), on the Behaviour-tab set the "Hide Launcher" to "Autohide".
