View Full Version : [SOLVED] Left speaker stays on when headphones are plugged in. No sound in right speaker ever.

Hi, I have an Acer Aspire 5253 and am having what seems to be a common problem: when I plug in the headphones, the speaker stays on. But it's only the left speaker. The right speaker never works at all.

When no headphones are plugged in: left speaker makes sound, right speaker makes no sound.
When headphones are plugged in: left speaker still makes sound, right speaker makes no sound, left and right headphones BOTH make sound. (so it's not a balance issue.)

Before anyone asks, yes, I researched the problem and found lots of previous posts on these forums. The solution that works for most people seems to be adding this at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=acer

For me, this changes nothing. I also tried model=auto and model=acer-aspire.

I also looked at the Ubuntu Community sound config page, but it looks like it's out of date, and the instructions didn't work for me anyway.

I'm wondering if this might be some kind of PulseAudio issue, but can't figure out how PulseAudio and alsa work together (whose job is it to send sound to speakers?), or where the settings for PulseAudio are.

Here is the output of alsa-info.sh:

I've tried lots of different settings on Sound Preferences, but I either get the same results or else I disable sound completely.

I have two sound cards showing up in Sound Preferences as well as in gnome-alsamixer, and I'm pretty sure I only have one. lspci only lists one.

You have one physical card that contains two devices. Try removing anything you added to alsa-base.conf and placing this line at the bottom:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
Save. Close. Reboot.

Hi lidex,

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already tried that change to alsa-base.conf (see my post above for what I already tried). It makes no difference.

What does it mean that I have two devices on one sound card? Could they be conflicting with each other somehow?

thanks, hreichgott

Your alsa-info doesn't show anything for distro or sound servers (it is also truncated), can you fill in the blanks? Does the hardware work correctly in other OS? Please return alsa-base.conf to default and use alsa-info script via this method:
Run this command in a terminal:

wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
Choose the upload option and provide a link for the output.

Sure, here is the link

Thanks for taking the time.

I do not know if the hardware works in other OS--this is the only OS I use. This was a problem in 10.10 also.

Yeah I can see why. Try this using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Reboot

Doesn't that line just append "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" onto the end of the alsa-base.conf file? Like I said before, I've already tried that. I did just try it again and the results are the same: sound in left headphone, right headphone, and left speaker; no sound in right speaker.

If you can see what's wrong by looking at the alsa-info output, can you enlighten me as to what the problem is?

Sorry, I actually did read that. Sometimes get threads mixed up. However it may help to see alsa-info with the auto model in place. That appears to have worked for others with the same machine.

Your codec is based on 5066. Here are the possible models:

Conexant 5066
=============
laptop Basic Laptop config (default)
hp-laptop HP laptops, e g G60
asus Asus K52JU, Lenovo G560
dell-laptop Dell laptops
dell-vostro Dell Vostro
olpc-xo-1_5 OLPC XO 1.5
ideapad Lenovo IdeaPad U150
thinkpad Lenovo Thinkpad

'ideapad' seems to be a popular one (even for other latptops) so I would try that first.

Well, I finally tried all these model names, and each of them produces exactly the same behavior!

This makes me wonder if alsa-base.conf is really controlling the sound at all. Don't we also have PulseAudio and OSS? Could one of them be controlling the sound? I do not know much about how they work together.

I also tried changing settings in gnome-alsamixer and pavucontrol, but that didn't affect the problem at all.

OK, I'm going to mark this one solved.

I feel foolish, but have only just now discovered that the Acer Aspire only has ONE speaker, located near the left side of the underside of the computer. I had not thought to consider the possibility that the computer could only have one speaker.

Then I found this bug site on launchpad
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/775788

where they suggest entering the model part of alsa-base.conf for an Acer Aspire with this codec (Conexant 5066) as follows

model=olpc-xo-1_5,dell-vostro

That fixed the headphone jack problem for me--now plugging in headphones turns off the internal speaker.

Did you reboot after each change?
Post an updated alsa-info please.

Yes, did reboot after each change. That's how I determined the launchpad fix worked.

this is alsa-info now
