This was a problem for me on 10.10 but it seems to have got worse on 11.04
I have the system load applet on the bar at the top. When the desktop loads the CPU is stuck at 100% forever. The mouse flickers as if there's not enough resources to draw it and any operation is difficult to accomplish. I did have a look at the system monitor just now and it wasn't showing any processes using any CPU time. (0% sleeping).
On reboot it usually starts up fine. Obviously you get a peak as it loads but that quickly settles down.
Weird huh? Are there some log files that I could post thatmight be helpful (and how do I get them...)?
