View Full Version : Big Forums Changes Coming Soon!!!

Technoviking
May 10th, 2011, 02:37 PM
The Ubuntu Forums will soon have a new look (see attached screenshot) and will be upgraded to this latest version of the vBulletin software [1]. The final roadblocks have been discussed at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, currently happening in Budapest Hungary, and after those problems have been addressed the upgrade and theme change can proceed.

If you want to check out some of the graphics for the forums, they maybe downloaded from Launchpad using bazaar[2]. We would love our forums community to contribute some artwork to the new look of the forums. More detail to follow on how to do this.

Thanks and more news on the forums upgrade soon.

Cheers,
T-V

At least you tried. I remember a project ESR started back in like, 2008, to get peoples code out of sites like sourceforge so the authors could have a copy on hand.

So this is a problem without a solution? Or is there just a snag with existing ones?

Smiles:

Here are some examples of some of the new smiles that will be using in the new forums theme.

If want to contribute any smiles please upload them to the forum rebranding bzr branch (lp:~mike.basinger/ubuntuforums.org/rebranding) or email to mike.basinger@ubuntu.com. The smiles should be 16x16 png files with a transparent background or a SVG file. The color orange used in the other smiles is #DD4814. We will consider adding animated gifs but they need to be tasteful and match the new theme (color and style wise).

For the record, I drink lots of tea whilst using Ubuntu. There should be a British Ubuntu Forum theme, changing coffee beans to tea leaves :D

Sir,

I run a MyBB powered forum [not big as this one]. Before 2-3 years Open Source Softwares were not secure as paid ones. Now I can't see any major loops in MyBB 1.6.x series. After Kier and Mike left Vbulletin and started xenForo, Vbulletin is loosing its popularity.

I just said "expecting", I have no problems about using of paid software here. If I said something against rules Sorry!

Where is the big forum changes?

I was expecting something like going from the current theme to something like this http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/

eg, bigger individual forum icons, clearer more focused forums, forums that are important to me showing up first, etc

It's good to see it fit into the new ubuntu theme though, so good work there :)

I run a MyBB powered forum [not big as this one].

The emphasised section is one of the main reasons we use vBulletin. The forums originally ran on PhpBB, but started to struggle at around 10,000 users I believe. Besides, as Technoviking said, there's no immediately visible solution that would allow us to migrate the vast amount of data to another forum software package.

Will this break my userstyle theme for the forum?

Probably. Do you have a link to the UserStyle? If so let me know, and I'll try it on the test forum and let you know ;)

The new theme is based off of the Ubuntu branding guidelines (http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit/ubuntu-brand-guidelines/) to be inline with other Ubuntu websites. I will see if a darker theme could be a secondary choice for people if they prefer that, no promises.

Hello,

I could not restrain myself from mentioning that the original classic ubuntu forums theme is one of the best I have encountered so far in the whole net.

Nice pale colours (gradually fading) dressed with vivid ones very pleasing to the eye! The design and user friendly interface is second to none! Kudos then to the original designers of the forum and all the work they did, do and will do for the forum to be accessible and to remain in this high level of usability.

I'll never forget an April fool's day change of colours a couple of years ago that caused a smart surprise "shock"!

Just an attachment of the original one, that soon will be a past memory...

I am glad that you are getting rid of the Absolute Beginners Talk support section. It was being abused. Many of the questions were not absolute beginners questions. I might be a beginner in many areas but the subject that I may want help with will not be a beginner's subject. And so, should be asked in the appropriate sub-forum.

I also do not like the way that some people use the support sections to post rants, complaints and opinions thinly disguised as questions.

I am not a great fan of bright orange, but I guess that we are stuck with it. Can we keep this smile this colour, just to be awkward? ](*,)

From what I understand, it'll be vbulletin 4.1.x - I don't know exactly which minor release it will eventually be. vB4 also offers us features we don't currently have, as well as improvements.

In addition to this, I think vB4 is styled solely with CSS, whereas vB3.x is done using tables. This would make it pointless to upgrade the theme, then have to do it again for a software upgrade.

I use another forum which has upgraded to vBulletin v.4.1.0. The advanced search function is absolutely useless on that forum. I do search -> advanced search -> user name and last 30 days. I've made at least a dozen posts but the search returns "no posts found" or words to that effect. The previous vBulletin version there-current version here- the advanced search function worked perfectly as it does here. I'm not sure if it's a software problem or installation/administration problem but on that site, thank goodness for google search.

It really has been too long. The new theme alone would make using this forums ten times more interesting. I bet we'd get a much different attitude here, as well. The new design seems more professional, more lively, and I think people may behave differently on the forums as a result.

Why have a huge sticky thread? Just to make people yearn for it? While it might tick some people off, I'd much rather it happen without me knowing in advance.

Smiles:

Here are some examples of some of the new smiles that will be using in the new forums theme.
http://www.mikesplanet.net/ubuntuforums/biggrin.png
http://www.mikesplanet.net/ubuntuforums/confused.png
http://www.mikesplanet.net/ubuntuforums/cool.png
http://www.mikesplanet.net/ubuntuforums/eek.png
http://www.mikesplanet.net/ubuntuforums/frown.png

If want to contribute any smiles please upload them to the forum rebranding bzr branch (lp:~mike.basinger/ubuntuforums.org/rebranding) or email to mike.basinger@ubuntu.com. The smiles should be 16x16 png files with a transparent background or a SVG file. The color orange used in the other smiles is #DD4814. We will consider adding animated gifs but they need to be tasteful and match the new theme (color and style wise).

Thanks,

The current launchpad openID login feature is broken. See:

Will the new design fix these issues?

Thanks.

Apparently, despite the fact that a moderator directed me here, this thread is reserved for minor cosmetic changes only. Beyond smilies and beans, where is the appropriate place to report broken functionality so that it can get fixed?

So what are you guys thinking of doing to replace the coffee beans? I like my coffee beans, but they will not fit with the new theme.
I guess we have to think what will go good with Orange, and has to do with Ubuntu.....
Maybe we could upload our own pics for that area? Custom text?

EDIT: I just saw this post:

User ranks aren't something that will be high on the list. I think we're in a position where we'd rather get the software upgraded without the ranks in place - that's not to say they'll be abandoned, but just added at a later date.

As for the Launchpad login, I believe that's the only thing that is holding back the upgrade now (i.e. it doesn't work at all with vB4), once this is resolved, we can pencil in dates to upgrade the software with Canonicals IS team.

If I log in through that would it be a different account than what I'm using now? IE no more beans/posts, different join date etc. Or is it that there will be some sort of account sync? Where I could say launchpad account X is the same person as Ubuntuforums account Y?

It links to your current account. I haven't a clue how it works, but I know that's what happens. My LP account is linked to this forum account. If you visit your profile (or any profile, for that matter), you would see something similar to this:

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned before... (I haven't been following

of a thread after you've posted it? (For a limited period of time.)
I know that you can do this in phpBB, and a couple of times I've posted
threads with typos in the title, and I've missed a way of correcting it afterwards.

See for instance my famous Rouge alien planet-thread:

As a huge fan of jelly beans, I think that's that's a great idea. I do also like counting "beans" instead of "posts", it's just a five letter word, but to me "beans" has a totally different (cooler?) feel.

If beans are totally out, what about animal ranks like the ones different version of Ubuntu use? Start off as a sloth and work your way up to "ubuntu busy bee" or something.

At any rate, the new style is a winner!

Are you saying there is no point to the Ubuntu forums if the developers don't read them?
That's not what the forums are for, it's for helping other users or discussing related (and completely unrelated) topics.
If you want to talk to the developers themselves, there are many mailing lists you can subscribe to.

I didn't say that there would be no point to the forums, they're pretty good for user support. However, the single, greatest improvement possible would be for the developers to actually read the forums, at least the development forum.

Ubuntu would be a lot better if they did and wouldn't develop the future versions of Ubuntu isolated in their ivory towers. Linux Mint proves how valuable interaction between developers and users can be.

I'm just saying you can't fault the forums for something the devs chose (not) to do.

The quality and usability of Ubuntu suffering because of that is debatable though.

EDIT: If the forums could somehow connect to some of the more popular/relevant mailing lists like Ayatana and GNOME Shell and display them in a forum view then that would be cool.

I wish my mod powers were enough to change the title of the thread...
