Unless the OP is interested in the next version after Dapper, the Edgy Eft. I think that one will come out in October or November.

Ubuntu has a 6mnth release cycle for new versions.

6 refers to the year 2006
06 refers to the 6th month of the year 2006.

Ubuntu version numbers are usually x.04 & x.10. This gives you a new release every six months. Dapper on the other hand has broken the 6mnth cycle so they can deliver a polished product and is being released 2mnths late, thus the 6.06.

... and continuing mips' thorough explanation, it seems that Edgy Eft will be a 6.10 release, thus bringing Ubuntu back on the 6-month track :)

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they changed it to a x.05 and x.11 release scheme instead. That way we would get a more stable, but still fresh release of Gnome in every release. The x.04 and x.10 scheme is basically about releasing the distro with the first new version of Gnome that isn't a development version... not optimal. But the LTS idea makes up for this I guess.
