Hi everybody,
I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 today. Since I don't really like Unity, I tried to go back to Gnome, but after following this (http://linux-software-news-tutorials.blogspot.com/2011/05/alternatives-if-do-not-like-unity.html) instructions to install Gnome 3, I ran into various problems. Gnome 3 didn't seem to work properly, so I tried the fallback to Ubuntu Classic, just to find out, that this version of Gnome doesn't work very well on my computer as well (I have the same problem as described here (http://ubuntuforums.org/here) and some problems with the Gnome control center, it's not showing all it's options).
To make it short: I would like to kick out Unity and Gnome completely and switch to Xfce 4.8. Googling it, I found the following command:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
I know, it's a bit silly, but I'm afraid to screw up my system even more. So I would like to know, where would that take me? What would happen to Gnome, Unity and my files (I expect, nothing). And when everything goes successfully, how can I uninstall Gnome & Unity and bring my system back in order? My aim achieve a system as if I had installed Xubuntu form the start without deleting all my data, programs and settings. Any ideas?
