I hear that people have home partition and ubuntu installation partition, how do you do this ? I really have to understand it, because I came to conclusion that it is always better to do clean ubuntu release installation then upgrading.

here is a good guide for it: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving

The steps are explained quite well.

While you repartition: I always make an extra partition for the next ubuntu installation: so I install a new ubuntu next to the one I used before. This way, when something breaks (like now, due to trying to install gnome3), I still have a backup OS and thanks to the separated /home, I don't have to worry to find my files.
