Ever since I loaded 11.04 onto my computer a few days ago, no media applications, i.e. Rhythmbox and Banshee, have both failed, and Evolution has been experiencing some glitches as well.

Whenever I launch Rhythmbox, the window shows up as normal, but then a second later, the application crashes. I have no idea why this is, only that it is a huge pain in the neck. Whenever I launch Banshee, a popup comes up that says
Encountered a fatal error.
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. The drop-down icon labeled "Error Details" reads:

An unhandled exception was thrown: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Also, before I updated, I used the Evolution RSS plugin to subscribe to webcomics and blogs and such, but when I installed it again into 11.04 (I wiped the drive, that's why I say "again"), the application window shows up, but then after that, it is unresponsive, even the close button, sometimes.

Does anyone have any idea as to why these applications are malfunctioning as they are, and if so, can you help?
Thanks in advance.

[Edit]
Also, for some reason, a popup window that says
Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired. Do you want to repair it now? pops up when I open the Software Center to remove the plugin. When I click "OK," it asks for my password once, then the popup appears again. When I try to launch the Update Manager to perform the tasks without the middleman of the Software Center, it crashes after it finishes building data structures. Any idea how to fix this?

Hi! It's too bad what happened :s Time ago this was common in Ubuntu when doing distro-upgrade, but since a couple of years my experience is that it work flawlessly.

But well, my recommendation is to do a complete reinstall using a live cd... But if you want to try recover your actual installation, try to do a downgrade first (i had never done that). Here is a guide for you to do that: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DowngradeHowto

And then try a new upgrade but close the application while the system is upgrading. Maybe something is lost when doing the upgrade, or something failed and passed unnoticed.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your response, but it seems I was unclear in my original post. When I upgraded, I decided to completely wipe the drive; I didn't upgrade from 10.10, I started over, so there shouldn't have been any files left over from Maverick.

Also, the problem with the Software Center was resolved.

Ah ok!

Can you check if the cd/usb that you used to upgrade is fine? (i mean, if you can checksum it)

All the applications worked well before the upgrade? When you installed 11.04 did you erase / partition? maybe it only reinstalled over it...

Hope it helps.

There are a lot of similar reports of media players not working. I would stay with 10.10 at least for a couple of months more (or maybe as long as it is supported).

When I reinstalled, I formatted the drive, so I couldn't have installed over it.

Also, I just reinstalled from a CD (the first time, I used a flash drive) and reformatted (that can't be too good for the computer, can it?), and now I'm having troubles with the update manager; it won't install new software, and whenever I try, it says
"An handleable error occurred," and that
"There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks." I'm not sure what's wrong, because it will install one or two packages at a time, but only certain types, none of which are apt, which might solve the problem (I think).

Reformatting is not damaging. Actually it is the best you can do, if you can not proceed in other ways to get a problem solved.

For the update problems, try to boot the computer and run

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Please post the error messages, if any.

You, sir, are a life saver. Thank you very much.

So the problem with the updates was fixed, but I'm still having trouble with several applications. The biggest problem is Chromium, which will randomly kill pages, or even shut down altogether. Evolution won't allow me to add RSS feeds, and will freeze up every time I try to do so (I installed the evolution-rss extension).

Do you have any idea of how to deal with that?

Hi, a lot of people are having trouble with Chromium, so they have switched to chrome, you can download and install if from google for linux. I am not sure about your other problem.
