I just loaded the new upgrade and now the top bar does not appear.

If the cursor moves over the top bar area the menus drop dow, but every else is black-- power button, wireless icon,... all gone.

How do I get these back?

I believe you'll find the answers you need to resolve your local problem in this post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...10&postcount=2 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10779010&postcount=2)
and the tutorial it refers to on diagnosing compiz problems, reconfiguring and customising it:
http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com...-in-unity.html (http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com/2011/04/missing-top-and-side-panels-in-unity.html)

Please let me know how it goes and if that information helped.

Welcome to forums Jon,

If you have upgraded to Natty (11.04), I hope this thread by hedgehog1 may help you:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1741293

If a previous one, then I guess "Autohide" is somehow enabled for the top panel. Just disable it in panel properties, and to add the icons just right-click (on the panel) > Add to Panel > select "Clock", "Indicator Applet", "Notification Area", "Indicator Applet Session",.... (and whatever else you need) from the opened list.

If this doesn't help, please mention exact version you are using. Some screenshots may be great!

Thanks, guys. Very quick replies. Fixed.

Emboldened, I ask two more:

How do I make a status bar at the bottom?

How do I make the launcb bar disappear forever?

Glad you got it :).

But you still haven't mentioned clearly whether you are using Natty or a previous version. Also, which solution worked for you.

Stating those (and marking thread as [solved]) will help others who are having similar problems and come across this thread looking for a solution.

About your last two questions, what do you mean by status bar? If it means the list of opened apps/windows, then in versions previous to Natty, it could be added in the following manner:
Right-click on the panel > select "Add to Panel" > select "Window List" in the subsequent list.
I'm not sure about how to do this in Natty (haven't tried it yet). But if you are using Natty, did you have a look at the thread I suggested in my previous post?
