How do I delete/uninstall/turn off

the launcher/taskbar thing on the left?

I've tried almost every combination of searching for launcher/panel on google and nothing works..

open the "dash"
(click the ubuntu logo in the top left, or press the "super/windows" key, and type in "login screen",
[without the quotes] and click on it when it shows in the list.

when it opens, choose "Ubuntu classic" as the default desktop at login.
then log out, and back in..
back to regular desktop.

Yeah, the Unity interface is really built around the Launcher, and there's no way to disable or move it, but you couldn't really access any of the new features in Unity without it, anyway; the Classic Desktop's Gnome Panel has all the same parts as the Unity panel.
